FALL RIVER, Wis. (AP) -- A Fall River man was arrested after a standoff in which he locked himself and his two young children in his house while armed with a knife.

The man's ex-girlfriend and mother of the children, ages 1 and 3, told police the 19-year-old father was armed with a large knife when she came to pick up the children.

She says he then locked her out and went to a second-story window and dumped what he said was acid on her head.

A Columbia County sheriff's detective eventually convinced the father to release the children. They were not injured. The man later surrendered to authorities.

The woman was taken by ambulance to the hospital in Columbus where she was treated for burns to her scalp and skin.

From the Fall River Police Department:

On 02-02-09 at approximately 11:01 am The Fall River Police Department was dispatched to 218 Niehoff Dr for a 911 hang up. Chief Brent A. Van Gysel responded to the above location at which time nobody would come to the door. All the doors were locked and window blinds were closed making it unable to see in.

Chief Van Gysel noticed a vehicle pull into the driveway. Chief Van Gysel was informed by the female subject that her ex-boyfriend, Nicholas Zingg, the father of her children told her to come get the kids. When she arrived he came to the door with a big knife. Words were exchanged between the female subject and Zingg at which time Zingg closed the door and locked it with the kids of 1year and 3 years old in the duplex. Zingg went to the second level floor where he opened the window and dumped what he said was acid on the females head, stating now your hair will fall out and your skin will burn.

Chief Van Gysel called for assistance, which the Columbia County Sheriff’s Department responded. Sheriff’s Detective was able to talk Zingg into releasing the children without harm and shortly after talked Zingg into coming out without incident, at which time he was taken into custody waiting charges. Zingg also had warrants for his arrest from other jurisdictions.

The female was transported by Fall River EMS to the Columbus Hospital for burning of the scalp and skin. The female subject was released from the hospital short time later. It has not been determined what the liquid was at this time.

Justin Wichman and Joe Steffan if you two were there during this stand off I would like to tip my hat to you both. You both have very bright futures ahead of you. If I had a department I would for sure hire you both. Those kids are safe and so is the significant other. Nice job FRPD!!!

"most scariest" Are you serious? This was not a random act, nobody else was in danger. Sad for the mother and children, but to be afraid yourself is a bit of a stretch. Considering nothing ever happens in this village I think your safe. We could actually stand to get rid of the PD, contract with the county and save some money on our tax bills.
