MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- An atheists' group and a church are taking their rivalry on the road, using ad space on Madison Transit buses to display their competing messages.
The Madison-based Freedom From Religion Foundation is spending $2,100 on six signs appearing for up to two months inside 50 buses. Each sign has a quotation questioning religion or giving reasons for not believing.
A quote from the late actress Butterfly McQueen, who appeared in the movie "Gone With the Wind," says, "As my ancestors are free from slavery, I am free from the slavery of religion."
In response to the ads, Pilgrims Covenant Church in Monroe says it purchased space on the outside of 11 Metro Transit buses for an ad quoting Psalm 14, verse 1: "The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God."
The church's ads cover a large part of one side of each bus. They cost about $5,000.
Madison Metro spokesman Mick Rusch says any ad sales help the bus system.

One of the reasons that the FFRF is doing this is to raise awareness and spark debate like the one we are having. It is money well spent if it jolts the religious out of their comfort zone of thinking this is a christian nation. The separation of church and state is not BS, and very much worth fighting for. The alternative is a Taliban-like theocracy. It has been going that direction for 20 years or so, especially during the last 8 with a born-again in the white house. If the born agains and the baptists, the mormons, were live and let live, that'd be fine...but they're not. They want a theocracy and I'm willing to spend my money on law suits and bus signs, whatever it takes, to fight that. The signs tweak the religious' noses (they need that so they don't get too pious), and rally the ever-growing numbers of non-believers. To the bible thumpers: Your centuries of intimidating rule over us is ending! Oh, and you can thank George W. Bush for getting us Nones off our butts!

Religious intolerance combined with their myths have been shoved down the throats of millions for millemia. Hurrah for any and all who stand up to their malicious, bigoted, and emotional based hoopla with solid reason, logic, and empirical evidence.

Good Point Tina from Madison. You're absolutely right, there should be no symbolic representation of any kind on government property- and since the flag is the "Symbol" of the United States, let's get rid of that, too. Oh, and Miss Forward up there on top of the Capitol building, and the State Flags at every state owned/ run facility. If you are going to preach a world of unity and respect, then abolish all forms of symbolism and idol worship! Goodbye American Bald Eagle, good bye Badger... I'm not a dairy farmer, so I think Wisconsin should not be called "America's Dairyland" or "The Badger State"! Then we better take down the symbols on restroom doors, because as a woman, I certainly do not wear skirts all the time, so my figure is not always a triangle! (sometimes I wear shorts, or gads! even pants!) Ooh, better get rid of that symbol of the rich, the dollar bill! you know, the federal symbol with "in God we trust" on it!
