UPDATE: A 12-year-old boy who wandered away from school has been found 4 miles from school.

UPDATED Thursday, March 26, 2009 --- 2:55 p.m. & 2:30 p.m.

The 12-year-old boy who wandered away from Mazomanie Elementary School has been found. The boy went missing this morning. He was found at a neighbor's home near his house. He has been reunited with his parents.

Mark Elworthy, District Administrator with the Wisconsin Heights School District says the child walked 4 miles.

The child is identified as 5th grader Michael Arneson. We are told he is a special needs child.

Breaking News from the NBC15 Newsroom:

Right now, deputies are searching for a missing 12-year-old boy.

He wandered away from Mazomanie Elementary School this morning.

Right now, Dane County deputies, Mazomanie and Black Earth firefighters and volunteers are searching for the boy.

He is 5'2", 90 pounds. He is wearing a blue shirt and jeans.

The Dane County Sheriff's Department will be doing a reverse 911 in this area.

We are told they are searching a one square mile area around the elementary school.

Mark Elworthy, District Administrator with the Wisconsin Heights School District says the child's parents have been contacted. They are assisting in the search.

Thanks for some good points Brigit, perhaps your comments with shed some light on the subject for all those who wonder how this can happen. I understand that these things can and will happen. Nothing can be done to make sure this never happens again.

Brigit said it very well. This child will now likely have an escort non-stop. Thus, creating less freedom for the student and more money spent on staffing needs for the taxpayers. Nobody should complain though--remember this is a child's safety and if schools are going to be blamed.......

That poor kid, I am so happy he was found. On the flip side, I would be VERY angry at the school if he were my child!
