From the Dane County Sheriff's Department:

Madison, WI. March 30, 2009 – A rollover crash in the town of Deerfield resulted in Highway 12/18 being shut down for approximately two hours this morning.

Dane County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the crash at 8:40 am. A 1998 Jeep driven by Alex S. Champagne, age 16 of Cottage Grove, lost its front wheel as he was traveling eastbound on Highway 12/18. A 2002 Isuzu Axiom traveling westbound swerved to miss the wheel, causing the driver, Joanne M. Barrow, age 47 of Fort Atkinson, to lose control. The Isuzu rolled over and eventually came to rest in the eastbound lane of the highway.

Joanne Barrow and her passenger, 16-year-old Ellery L. Barrow (daughter), were transported to UW Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Champagne was not injured in the incident. All parties were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.

b, if this was your family member, you probably wouldn't be lecturing them on if they completed a controlled swerve or not. You'd be thankful they were ok and mark it as an accident. Plus, how do you know how she swerved, were you a witness? Im glad everyone is ok in this accident. You have to ask yourself would you want to be lectured if this was your family member, my guess is not.

b- I understand your point, but things happen to fast to react that way! You do your best with what your given. If you see a wheel coming at you, your going to swerve to avoid it. Maybe you catch the edge of the road and roll over, that's not being reckless or "uncontrolled." It's called an accident avoiding a deadly object flying through the windshield. Your right, this is an open forum and you have the right to say what you feel. And in a perfect world we would b able to see into the future and know that a wheel was coming at us. But we can't do that, so you react as best you can. Just because someone rolls their vehicle doesn't mean they were careless or not in control. Show us all how it's done with your perfect driving skills next time a huge wheel comes at you!

Hi B, I'm Jo, the driver you are slamming. When I first saw the wheel, it was 3 stories in the air and coming right for me. I was going 60 mph. Put yourself in my drivers seat. Assuming its coming at you at 60 mph or so, aimed at YOU, you wouldn't swerve? You would take it in the face? I agree, don't swerve for rabbits or deer or a box in the road. This is different. This is a flying object. I don't care what your judgement of my driving is since you couldn't know. My truck is gone. My daughter and I were injured and are in pain. We just got out of the hospital. But you know what? I am so thankful I am alive to be able to feel the pain. You can disagree - its a free world. I guess I'm glad it happened to me and not you because if you stuck to your hard and fast rule, you wouldn't be alive right now. God bless.
