MONROE, Wis. (AP) -- Twenty-one fire departments from Wisconsin and Illinois worked to douse a brush fire that consumed hundreds of acres in southern Wisconsin.
Fire officials say brisk winds and dry conditions fueled the blaze north of Monroe Sunday afternoon.
Monroe Deputy Fire Chief Lane Heins says flames reached 15 feet high with the fire burning 800 to 1,000 acres of grass and corn fields.
Firefighters were able to keep the fire away from some houses, barns and a natural gas pipeline.

A grass fire in Green County burned about 1,000 acres Sunday afternoon.
The initial call came around 1 p.m. for an area between Highway 69 and County N north of Monroe.
It took 20 departments - some from South Central Wisconsin and others from Illinois - about four hours to put out the flames.
Firefighters say the flames came close to a couple of homes and barns, but no structures were damaged.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.

I would just like to say to the "Mike" from Madison that posted the comment. First of all, I was there at that fire. Deputy Chief Heins did the right thing at the right time. Had he not implimented the MABAS alarm , there would have more damage than was had. People would have lost their homes and possibly their place of business. This was a fire that raged beyond anyones expectations. It was a tough fire to fight and without the help of all of the responding units it could have been a disaster. Not one firefighter was standing around for one minute. I would hope that someone also thanked the farmers who came to help. Chief Rousch has stated in the past that it is better to have too much help than not enough. I stand by that. You can always turn the trucks around to go home. MFD is a very respectable department. As for you Mike, if you are not on a department, I wouldn't be so quick to pass judgement. It could happen to you. You just may need a fire department some day.

I suppose they did a bang up job of putting their ariel in the wrong place (while Orangeville and Brodhead FF's put out the fire) and had like 30 extra Monroe FF's standing around with SCBA's on for the Badger Ethanol Fire, also? As far as not "emptying any one town," you can only get so many guys on a unit..so they wouldn't empty a town of FF's. Yes, Monroe is a respectible Dept., but it just wasn't Monroe (nor has it ever been just Monroe)handling the fire, as I'm sure you'll agree.
