A loose dog and a deer combined their efforts to make an eventful morning at Rock Lake Manor on Friday.

At approximately 6:15 a.m. a City of Lake Mills employee saw a dog and deer involved in a chase near the Municipal Building on Water Street.

As the chase continued from the Municipal Building to the Rock Lake Manor apartments, the deer decided the best way to escape the dog was to go through the living room window of 96-year-old Erna Sanft's apartment.

After breaking through the glass, the deer turned around and headed back out through what was left of the window.

At the time of the unexpected break-in, Sanft was in her bedroom asleep. She later suffered a cut on her hand, which will require
stitches.

Two of Erna's sons, Chuck and Bob, and Lake Mills Housing Authority Director Ann Osborne, were on the scene within minutes along with one of Erna's friends, Carol Vinje.

Vinje hurried downstairs after one of upstairs neighbors reported that there was a lot of noise coming from Erna's apartment.

The deer left a trail of broken glass and blood through the apartment's living room, which was cleaned up within an hour by Chuck and Bob Sanft, Osborne and Vinje.

"At 96 you think you've seen everything," said Sanft. "I think he wanted to get in bed with me!"
