On Wednesday June 17, 2009 at approximately 8:18 AM the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a motor vehicle crash between a school bus and passenger car.

The crash occurred on Williams road near Highway 16 in Otsego Township outside of Rio, WI.

Upon arrival, Sheriff’s Deputies observed a school bus partially in the ditch and the passenger car parked along the roadway.

The school bus had approximately 25 children on board who were being transported for summer school with the Rio School District.

The driver of the school bus was identified as 39 year old Kim Russell of rural Pardeeville, WI. Two of the students inside the bus received minor bumps and bruises.

The driver of the passenger car was identified as 16 year old Kristin D Olson of rural Rio, WI. Olson also received minor injuries as a result of the crash.

The incident remains under investigation however initial reports lead investigators to believe that Olson was attempting to pass the bus while the bus was completing a right hand turn into a private driveway to pick up students causing the two vehicles to collide.

Departments assisting on scene of the crash included the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Rio Fire Department and the Rio Ambulance Service.
