UPDATED Tuesday, June 23, 2009 --- 9:55 a.m.

VERONA, Wis. (AP) -- Officials say a head-on crash in Wisconsin that killed two Iowans apparently was caused when one driver was distracted by a dog jumping into his lap.

The Saturday crash of a motor home and sport utility vehicle near Verona killed 55-year-old John Seier of Dubuque and 13-year-old Travis Brune of LaMotte.

Dane County sheriff's office spokeswoman Elise Schaffer says the dog jumped into the lap of 62-year-old motor home driver Gary Boldt of Pewaukee, Wis., causing him to cross the median of U.S. Highway 151 and collide with the SUV.

Two other boys in the SUV were injured.

Anonymous at 10:43- My thoughts are with all involved. BUT, the fact is this could have been avoided had the dog been properly restrained. My heart and compassion is with the families of two innocent people who were minding their own business being responsible. It was irresponsible to let a dog loose in a motor home and that decision took the lives of two and injured two more. Think of the family of the boy, only 13 years old and to have to lose a child over this. So yes, my thoughts are also with the people in the motor home as I know it will not be an easy road. HOWEVER, they still get to travel that road. And they took away not only the life of a man but a boy who was just starting his life. You obviously have inside information regarding the dog. But it doesn't matter if it was sitting in the drivers lap or running around crazy. It should not have been near the driver. PERIOD. And that decision took two innocent lives. My heart is also with the other 2 boys who have a long road too.

The true lack of compassion seems to be with the 10:43 post. A child was killed due to the fact that a pet was not controlled. Too many people treat pets as babies. Spoiled babies at that. When you treat a pet like a baby the pet becomes the boss. Dogs need to be lead and trained correctly. It's in their nature. This tragedy is 100% perventable if the pet is obedient.

Anonymous at 10:43pm, are you saying the police are lying then? What would their motivation be for doing that?
