UPDATE Monday, June 29, 2009 -- 4:30 pm
A local man is under arrest. A Madison mother is in pain after the loss of her son Saturday night. 19-year-old Larry Caraway was killed in a hit and run at the intersection of Verona and Raymond Roads on Madison's Southwest Side.
"He had a smile... Smile just caught you right off."
DeeDee Griffin remembers what she calls her son's "goofy" smile.
19-year-old Larry Caraway is the eldest of Griffin's seven children.
"He doesn't like to clean up, but he'll cook."
Caraway had hoped to turn his love for cooking into a career.
"He wanted to go to school for culinary arts," she says, "But he didn't get a chance to."
Police believe this man, Robert E. Jones, was driving when Caraway was struck and killed while crossing Verona Road, on his way home Saturday night.
Caraway had been visiting with friends in the Allied Drive area. Griffin says she was on the phone with her son, who was saying he and his younger brother would be late for curfew, when the call disconnected.
"He was like mom, you know I love you mom. I love you mom. I said I'm not playing with you, Larry. You better get here and then I went to go tell him to put my other son on the phone and the phone went dead. And I thought maybe his battery died or something."
But a few minutes later, Griffin got another call. It was from her other son... saying Larry was hurt.
"Even when I heard the sirens, I still figured ... always turn on lights... that's common... But then when I seen more than one flying down the street, that's when I went flying down Raymond Road... cause I knew it was serious, it had to be serious."
Larry Caraway was pronounced dead at the scene - a week ahead of his 20th birthday.
Court records show Robert Jones had outstanding warrants for another hit and run case from April. The victim in the case from April says Jones was speeding down the Beltline when he hit the side of the victim's van as he tried to weave in and out of traffic. The victim says he had trouble keeping up with Jones but followed him until police were able to catch him.

Madison: Police are still looking for the driver in Saturday night's fatal hit and run at the intersection of Verona Road and Raymond Road on Madison's southwest side.
Madison Police say around 10:45 Saturday night a driver northbound on Verona Road hit and killed a teenage boy who was crossing the street with his friends.
The driver left the scene.
Justin Jafferis drove by the scene just a couple minutes later and stopped to offer aid. He says the boy was in the road near the guardrail. "Unfortunately the shoes and clothes were knocked off of him so I could tell that he had been hit pretty hard."
Jafferis says the boy was surrounded by a small group of people. "It appeared to be two of his friends, maybe one. I know they were both pretty shaken up. Everybody was pretty well traumatized, but there were about 6 to 7 people."
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene. He was apparently crossing Verona Road with friends, coming from a convenience store on the west side of the road, returning to the Allied Drive neighborhood on the east side of the road. The crosswalk does have pedestrian walk signals.
"It's a very busy intersection," says Florenzo Cribbs, referring to the intersection of Raymond and Verona Roads. He says it's dangerous because drivers on Verona Road are often driving 50 miles an hour and not looking for pedestrians. "Sometimes even with the light being green it's hard to cross."
Neighbors say despite how dangerous the intersection can be, it is still quite popular. That's because the Speedway gas station on the other side of the highway is one of the only convenience stores open late at night. "The Speedway is a very popular destination," says Cribbs. "You can come here between 10 and around 3 am and it's usually crowded- after bartime."
Others say you have to be careful any time of day. "Usually when the light is red and no cars are coming we run across so that we don't take any chances of being hit," says 10-year-old Gordie Wright.
Wright and his friends say the victim lived in their neighborhood.
"Last time we saw him was yesterday," says 14-year-old Jordan Nabry. "That's the last time we saw him."
"That was one of our friends," says Wright.
Cribbs is President of the Allied -Dunn's Marsh Neighborhood Association. He wants to see something similar to the red flags Monroe Street residents use to cross safely. "It may not be flags, but it's going to be something similar to let the cars know that people are crossing."

anon @ 10:14, I remember that story, and it seems I agree with you - this was a job strictly for the police. I firmly believe that as a civilian the only time it's okay to point a gun on someone is when you're in imminent physical danger and the police can not get there in time to save you. If the police can get there in time, let them do the job. They're trained, they're brave enough, and they have the support structure to deal with the aftermath. But if they can't get there in time, you have a moral duty to protect yourself in the best manner you choose. I don't fear a gun in the pocket of an honest citizen. I fear one in the hands of a criminal; especially if I only have hope and my reflexes to save me.
