In an area full of difficulties for adults, now it's kids seeing trouble. Rock County's next big project: at risk youth. And the teens themselves know the dangers of drugs and alcohol best.

Ask any of these teens about drugs and alcohol and the response is pretty much the same. "I know of one person that used heroin." "I hear about drug use everyday in school." "One of my brothers friends died of an overdose last year during the summer."

We caught up with this group of teens before they performed at a fundraiser in Janesville. The money raised will be used to help kids avoid the pitfalls of drugs, alcohol and other risky behavior.

That's something these teens think needs to be done. "I think it's really serious because it's a problem that's kind of uncontrollable."

The event may be in Janesville. But the problems are all over south central Wisconsin.

From Sun Prairie where Kaleigh Prange says, " A lot of kids come to school 'high.' I won't lie. In my class I see them. Teachers have to kick them out because their eyes are bloodshot. "

To Madison where Nelo Parker says, " My friends will come back and tell me about their weekend and how they got smashed at a party and how they got high and passed out. "

Only one of the teens I spoke to claims to have experimented. But all of them say it's a problem and adults agree.

"I've seen it get worse because the treatment for them has disappeared. " Marv Wopat started working with at risk kids more than 20-years ago after he got done battling his own addiction.

He says events like Wednesday night's in Janesville are important because the money can help get troubled kids in treatment . " Where they belong is in treatment...so that they can become productive in society."

Wopat says if they're not productive in society then they won't have to many other choices in life.

Organizers at the fundraiser are hoping to raise about $20,000.

More and more kids in Janesville are using alcohol and drugs. This comes from the people who would know the best--their peers.

That's why Wednesday night the Janesville School District is holding a concert/fundraiser to get kids help. They're hoping to raise $20,000. The money would go towards things such as alcohol and drug assessments and mental health assessments.

Nice to see the kids aren't waiting for someone to save them from themselves, like far too many adults. Take the initiative, and fix it - nice job, Janesville students!!

This is a very unique idea. Kudos to Janesville for achknowledging and trying to attack the problem. At least they are trying to take the bull by the horns and make people aware of the problem. All too often it seems around here in the Madison area, everything gets swept under the rug and denial sets in that we don't have problems such as drugs or gangs. I hope their fundraiser is a big success and congrats to Janesville for at least taking steps to try and help at risk youth down there. Hopefully by Janesville bringing awareness out, that other communities like ours can follow suit and at least acknowledge these issues.
