From the Dane County Sheriff's Office:

Madison, WI. July 13, 2009 – At approximately 11:43 am, Dane County Sheriff’s Marine and Trail Deputies, and UW Lifesaving, responded to a distress call on Lake Mendota, near the 3400 block of Lake Mendota Drive in Shorewood Hills.

A group of children were canoeing as part of a summer camp program, when a 15-year-old boy, who is autistic, decided to jump from his canoe to go swimming. The boy began to struggle with a camp counselor who went in the water after him and he was attempting to remove his life preserver when deputies arrived.

Deputies were able to get the boy into the Sheriff’s boat and returned him to shore safely. He was not injured in the incident.
