Saving 30 to 50 percent on your grocery bill may be easier than you think. NBC 15's Michelle Riell has more on the community based organization doing just that.
Heidi Stewart says, "I thought it would be a good, a really good help for me, because I'm on assistance and a single parent." Heidi Stewart is a mother of three. She's been using the non profit organization SHARE to buy meats and produce for the last three years. Heidi Stewart says, "For me it's proven to be a little bit cheaper than some of the stores."
SHARE says it saves people like Heidi, 30-50% on their grocery bill, on things like meat and produce. Here's how it works. SHARE is similar to a co-op, but anyone can use it. There's no membership fee and no income requirements. Mary Kay Clark, one of the many SHARE coordinators, says, "The more people who participate, the better it is, because SHARE buys in bulk, so the more participants they have the more volume and the better discounts they're able to get."
That's one of the keys to offering deep discounts. The others are low overhead costs from operating out of warehouse near Milwaukee, using churches and community centers for distribution and relying on volunteers to help with coordination and distribution. Clark says, "Volunteers are really how it's made possible month after month, year after year."
As an example of some of the savings you can get, you can often times find 6, 8 oz steaks, like this new york strip or ribeye, individually wrapped for about $13.50. Another example of savings is their big value package with an assortment of meat and produce. SHARE charges $25, the grocery store, twice that. Heidi Stewart says, "I think it's good for the price."
Customers place their order a the beginning of the month and pick it up toward the end of the month. You can order online with your credit card or through the mail.

I have been both a client and volunteer for Share. I enjoy working with the other volunteers and seeing the people each month. It is a good social network also. People can use quest cards/food stamps to help purchase their food. This is a good volunteer activity for Scouts or whomever needs to perform community service.
