A fire in Cottage Grove leaves a family homeless Saturday night.

Dane County Dispatchers say the call for the fire on Melissa Lane came in just before three this afternoon.

Firefighters say the family was let in to get some items around 5:30 p.m., but they won't be able to live there right now.

There were no injuries reported at the scene.

Anon...Aug 27, 9:33pm...... "Also, doesn't Cottage Grove have a full-time ambulance? They were there, how long did it take them to get there? They come from the same place the fire trucks do. If their response was about the same as the fire department, then I don't see the benefit of having a full-time fire department." The ambulance and two police cars were there WAY before the first fire truck!

I'm not armchair quarterbacking anyone, you must have me mixed up with another poster. But I agree with whoever said it...if you are not comfortable with living in a community with a volunteer fire department, and somewhat longer response times, then you need to find another community to live in, not repeatedly complain about your fire department. I don't see what's wrong with that statement. You'd rather have people complain and whine?

All these comments are part of our right to exercise freedom of speech; however, the comments are mis-directed. If you really feel that Cottage Grove needs a full-time fire department then you need to approach it the right way with your elected officials. But before you say it took too long for the fire department to get to the house, did you take into account the construction the route they needed to use to respond? Also, doesn't Cottage Grove have a full-time ambulance? They were there, how long did it take them to get there? They come from the same place the fire trucks do. If their response was about the same as the fire department, then I don't see the benefit of having a full-time fire department. Regardless of all the comments, I personally think the situation is unfortunate and that the fire department did a great job considering they are volunteers. If you don't agree then tell someone who can make a change and quit critisising those that give their all despite the outcome.
