JEFFERSON, Wis. (AP) -- A nursing home owned by Jefferson County could close because voters have rejected spending nearly $2 million annually during the next four years to keep it open.
The 120-bed Countryside Nursing Home has needed about $3.4 million in taxpayer money over the past five years to pay its bills. The county board earlier authorized a sale of the nursing home if the referendum failed.
As state officials worked to plug a $6.6 billion budget deficit, it cut aid to municipalities, forcing local governments to take a hard look at programs that aren't mandated by the state.
In Dunn County, voters approved increased funding for its nursing home. Two other referendums on the same issue will be held this fall in Green and Shawano counties.
There are 42 county-owned nursing homes in 36 Wisconsin counties.

Voters in Jefferson County turned down a referendum seeking permission for the county to exceed the tax levy limit by nearly $1.96 million.
A vote of approval would have allowed the board to borrow money over three years to help fund Countryside Home in Jefferson.
Our news partner, The Lake Mills Leader, reports Countryside Home has an annual operating cost of about $3 million -- roughly the deficit Jefferson County is facing for three years.
The final tally of the vote:
3,475 voted to allow the board to borrow money
4,774 were against it

Eric,I'm glad you agree with me,However if you live in the city of Lake Mills,or in the school district, be prepared!Lake Mills and their leadership is not "Immune" TO PERSONAL AGENDAS.When you receive your tax bill for 2009/2010- I would suggest a "JAW" support. The "NEOLITHIC" thinking of the School Board,District Administrator,City Council and City Manager have "SEALED" Lake Mills "Fate" Enrollment is down, the School District still sit's on property bought from a former member "who made/make" their family retirement on.Lake Mills School District is a "dying breed" in the "K-4" PROGRAM...Their answer to dropping enrollment? "A" Infant-3 early child program..a program coop with JOHNSON CREEK because LMASD does not have enough participants to "SUSTAIN" it's own program. Now for all you "COUNTRYSIDE PRO PEOPLE"...I would much rather give my money to you then a "Ill-fated" Publicly form of tax paid day care that the LMASD HAS FUNDED!...Bottom line? The "ARROGANCE" has to stop.Dave

Edwards is in PRISON! Why does everyone seem to think he's at Countryside?

I agree with Dave, and like us I am guessing that most of the people that voted NO did so as they didn't want his or her taxes to go up and feel the county budget could be structured better. Those of us in Lake Mills have already seen a substantial increase in taxes due to school construction, a referendum which I agreed with. That said, It is indeed unfortunate that this may have an adverse affect on Countryside. There were 44,674 other voters in the county that could have showed up and voiced their opinion with a vote but chose not to do so.
