Dane County Sheriff’s Deputies cited a total of 13 drivers for Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) over the weekend.

A one-vehicle crash at approximately 2:25 am on Saturday, October 10th occurred when Jeffrey R. Bain, age 29 of Sun Prairie, failed to stop at a stop sign on Fish Hatchery Road in the town of Oregon. He crossed Lincoln Road and came to rest in a field. Because his passenger was injured in the crash, Bain was charged with OWI – Causing Injury. Bain had to be extracted from the vehicle due to the extensive front-end damage. Both he and his passenger were transported to UW Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

At approximately 2:30 am on Saturday, another Dane County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to a caller reporting a male and female arguing outside of a residence on Bruns Avenue in the town of Blooming Grove. Upon the deputy’s arrival, he met a male driving away from the scene. When the deputy stopped the vehicle, the man attempted to flee on foot. After a short foot pursuit, Brian E. Loring, age 25 of Waunakee, was in custody. Loring was also found to have three knives and a metal hatchet inside his vehicle. He was arrested for OWI – 4th Offense, Eluding, Resisting, and Carrying a Concealed Weapon.

An electronic speed board was damaged on Saturday at CTH G and Davis Street in Mt. Vernon when it was struck by a drunk driver. The driver left the scene, but based on evidence at the crash, a deputy was able to find the driver who later admitted to hitting the sign. The 58-year-old man from Verona was arrested for OWI – 1st Offense, Hit and Run, and Failure to Notify Police of an Accident. The speed board is currently not useable due to the damage.

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office will continue to have additional patrols throughout the county focusing on intoxicated drivers. According to Mother’s Against Drunk Driving (MADD), in the past decade, over 3,300 people have died in drunk driving crashes in Wisconsin.
