Release from the Rock Co. Sheriff's Office:
On Sunday October 25, 2009 at 1:42PM Deputies from the Rock County Sheriffs Office and Orfordville Fire and EMS were dispatched to a Motor Vehicle Crash at the intersection of W. State Road 11 and S. State Road 213. This intersection is a four-way stop in the Village of Orfordville.
Deputies arrived moments later and found two persons seriously injured in a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer that had been struck broadside by a large truck. The occupants of the Mountaineer were extricated and transported to Janesville Mercy Hospital by Janesville Paramedics and Orfordville EMS. The operator of the Mountaineer was flown by Med-Flight to UW Hospital in Madison. The operator died from the injuries at UW Hospital.
The initial investigation indicates that 27-year-old Kevin Campbell of Washington PA was eastbound on STH 11 approaching STH 213 in his 1997 International tandem axel truck. Witnesses indicate that the Mountaineer was northbound on STH 213, stopped at the intersection with STH 11 and proceeded into the intersection. Skid marks left by the International indicate that the brakes were locked up prior to the intersection and continued to the final rest. It impacted with the driver’s side of the Mountaineer. Campbell’s passenger, 31-year-old James Opic of Wheeling W. Virginia was not injured.
It does not appear that alcohol was a factor, but speed and inattentive driving may have contributed to the crash. The Wisconsin State Patrol is assisting with the investigation. STH 11 was detoured for over two hours.
The names of the deceased and injured occupant will be released Monday morning when all of the family has been notified.

It is not the road or the intersections problem. It is the driver. Every accident can be avoided due to driver error.

I was there before the ambulance got there and it was pretty clear that the truck heading up Hwy 11 did not stop at the intersection. Why 2 people the in the truck did not see this intersection is beyond me. This is not the fault of the WDOT but it is the fault of inattentive driving.

I live just down the road from this intersection. Very wide open area so you can see if someone is slowing down or not. I think unfortunately all parties had fault in this accident. Condolences to all the families involved this tragic accident.
