Idon't usually post comments, but this is rediculous. How can there be anything negative about the PRESIDENT of our counrty (wether you as adults support him) talking with children about how improtant school is. For once love you children and your country more than your ego. Yes, we are a free county, many men and women die protecting your right to say what you want, but this is the president. I absolutely did not supprot GW's policies, but when he was in the area that I lived I sat along the path of the motorcad for hours so my daughter could see the PRESIDENT. How great for those children to experience this. [ Report Abuse ]

"J" - I totally agree with you. It's a shame that people in society don't even respect the President of the United States anymore. Do I agree with everything he has done so far as President? No, but I still respect him for the position he holds. I would NEVER want his job. People expect way too much of Obama. One man is not going to change the world - it takes all of us to work for change, especially at the local level and congressional level of government. It truly is an honor that he visited Madison and gave hope to school kids that don't have a lot of positives in their lives. [ Report Abuse ]

J....I totally agree! Dawn in Beloit...give me a break, what does it matter if he's only HALF black, half white or whatever. Ignorant people like youself are the reason why change isn't occuring fast enough in this country. Like you so eloquently illustrated with your posts (sense the sarcism), education is a HUGE issue and it is an honor to have Pres. Obama speak at our schools. I don't recall Bush doing anything to improve the condition of our education system and from the many posts, education reform is desperately needed!! [ Report Abuse ]

Excuse me for questioning authority, excuse for me waiting to give my respect to someone until they earn it. Just because he was elected the president doesnt make him God, or a hero. This comment thread is exactly why I try to stay out of politics as much as possible. Both sides are blind to each other; few if any in this thread (and beyond this website), look at the overall, big picture. Instead, they focus solely on finger pointing and name calling. So many people here and elsewhere need to grow-up...I've seen spoiled 2 year-olds play nicer. How about we work on some real solutions to TODAY's problems instead of bickering back and forth? If people used half the energy they use to find fault with the other party, we might not be in as big of a mess right now. [ Report Abuse ]

Christina you are so wrong for blaming bush on everything like 911, it all goes back to CLINTON he had warning signs and chose to ignore them and push them under the table for the next guy to deal with. So in Essence Clinton is the one who caused the most damage to this countrey(9/11 opening the borders for the illegals etc) and bush just got stck tryin to clean his mess. So if you have to blame anyone blame CLINTON and NOT Bush, And i have personally to see yet Obama do anything besides overspend and shoot his big mouth off [ Report Abuse ]

Anon @ 05:58, when comments are made that a single president caused this mess, we attribute powers to a to the president beyond what is allowed by the constitution. You say Bush caused all this. While I don't like Bush, he did not cause this; only a king or congress has that power. Some say Obama will fix it, but he can't; only a king or congress has that power. So when I read people write of a president causing something, or being able to fix something, it strikes me as if we're giving them far too much power. [ Report Abuse ]

It is funny that Obama is talking at a public school and is closing it to the public. Though I do understand that he and his cronies don't want the school to sound like Lambeau when Brett walked out in purple, in case you missed it is was filled with the sound of booing! That would be bad PR! As to those who blame Bush, perhaps you should study up on American Politics, the president has very little power, he has to go through congress (the same congress who approved wars in Iraq and Afghanistan after 9/11 when it was popular then turned their back on our soldiers when it became unpopular to be for the war that they approved). What does that mean for Obama, he can't go around making promises about ending the wars, closing gitmo, and turning the economy around. I think that the speech should have been better planned and made available to the public, let him see what the true public thinks of him and hear our concerns! Whats the harm in that? So, it's not just money that Bush had a part in ruining it's our Amerian respect for a President because of Bush's failures. Sorry you don't like Obama and that's your choice, but once again if you look at the voting results there's a lot more people who do like Obama verses people who don't. Once again take care.... Anon @ 01:11 and Anonymous @ 11:14, it didn't take 8 years, it took over 80. It's the culmination of many idiots voted into congress since the 20s. Bush didn't do anything that Congress didn't allow. Neither did Clinton. Neither will Obama. Stop hoping for a president to have the power of king, and start realizing it's congress that got us in a mess, and they've been digging the hole deeper since the 20s. It's not fair! Why is it that a visit from the President of the United States is not open to the public when he is coming to South Madison? It can't be a matter of safety. Washington, DC is one of the most dangerous places to live and the President makes a lot of public appearances there! Whoever the "powers that be" who made that decision are just wrong! Those Americans that live here and WANT to see him may never have the chance to see President Obama in person, in Madison again. I want to know why we have been excluded from this opportunity? Tomorrow is promised to no one. Everyone who wants the chance to see him should be able to do so. After all,Meeting and seeing the President of the United States in person is part of the "pursuit of happiness" for many Americans. In all fairness, there should be a public appearance, even if it's just a few minutes! Please!? Reconsider! [ Report Abuse ]

O.K. I see a lot of blame here on President Obama and he hasn't even been in long enough to try and fix the great disaster Bush made in his 8 years here! Give him a chance or do you feel that every problem needs to be solved just like that in one year, GET REAL PEOPLE! You're not going to find that everybody in the United States is going to like the president as there's no such thing as everyone voting for the same guy, however you should give him a little more space to operate in instead of this little cubby hole that you expect him to work from! To those that did nothing but say negative about him; I'd love to see you be in his shoes and change the world in less than a year and if you couldn't do that then feel the negativity from those that voted for you to change the world while you were president! I guarantee that you wouldn't feel so much to blame President Obama if the shoes were on the other feet! [ Report Abuse ]

Too many want to blame a past president for this mess, and give all credit to a current one. Trouble is, the mess has little to do with any administration. It is more because of our own apathy towards being a free people. No president or member of congress should have the power this nation gives them. And none of this will get better until we all start demanding the right to live our lives without this much governmental intrusion. While government has it's place, and certain laws are necessary, the government is now too powerful. One day we'll lose all the constitution holds dear if we aren't careful. We aren't the USA without the constitution. [ Report Abuse ]

Digging out of the Bush hole? Are you blind? Obama has some of the best hole diggers on the planet in Reid and Polosi. When one finds themselves in a hole, the best thing they can do is stop digging. Obama and his ilk are digging with break neck speed. Good luck to us all, we're going to need it... I think the education system must be feeling if so many think that one person, even if he is the President, can really make so many jobs disappear and run the economy into the ground. That's a very simplistic view. As far as complaining about campaign promises not being met: NO President is able to keep all the promises made in a campaign. We think that we are electing the savior of the world, and within a few months a man who does not even write the laws or pass them (that's Congress' job) will be able to fix all that we feel is wrong with this country. Change does not happen overnight, or even in a single year. In terms of approval ratings, it's hard to compare the first year of the Bush and Obama administrations. The only reason that Bush didn't have the ratings Obama currently enjoys in his first year on the job was a little thing that happened in September of that year. I may not agree with all the policies that are put through, but I'd rather take that up with Congress. [ Report Abuse ]

I wonder if our these families will be notified ahead of time so they have the opportunity to keep thier child out of school that day for security? Probably not. [ Report Abuse ]

JO, it seems in your posts from 10/28 that you did a bit of insulting yourself, if you don't mind my saying. And neither of your posts were respectful at all. Contrary to what you seem to be willing to accept, many of us do not like Obama's policies because they run against what we stand for. It has nothing to do with a radio station or a news outlet. It is pure and simple dislike of his policies. Sorry, Sir, but the honor I would have had for you because of your service, has just been destroyed because of your insulting and disrespectful manner. Come on everyone! Quit the name-calling and blame games. We are all Americans! The problems we are complaining about have been going on a lot longer than either the Clinton, Bush, or Obama presidencys. It is NOT a Dem or Rep thing...it's a BIG GOVERNMENT thing. We are talking of ONE man in the white house while we have 535 people in DC "representing" us. Our government is overspending us into these problems. While we name-call and blame each other, the goofballs in DC are just merrily spending us into oblivion. The government is getting too intrusive into our lives. I believe most of us just want to live our lives, pursue our dreams, and we want the government to leave us alone! We need to unite as Americans and find our common ground and demand our ELECTED representatives actually listen to their constituents and vote accordingly! [ Report Abuse ]

Geesh JO, maybe a run for office would be feasible if your average income'd american could actually afford it. Politics has turned into a (very) rich man/woman's game. I could care less about republican or democrat and frankly party affiliation is pure B.S. How about some common sense governing? Golly what a concept! How about a campaign where the candidate actually says what they want to do (or will try to do) w/out being a timid little mouse because someon might get mad? Stop dancing around questions during your campaign and ANSWER them!! I've not seen it since Reagan's years. I was a teenager then and could've cared less about politics back then but that old duffer spoke his mind. He got my attention. That's all I want. A president that knows what needs repair and goes after it! I've not seen it yet out of "O". Maybe he will maybe he won't. I'm still waiting and trying to be patient. There's a lot here at home that needs repair. Yes, it's a mess. And no, I didn't like Bush either. [ Report Abuse ]

Thanks Bob - once again you prove my point. BTW, I did serve. 20 years and 3 wars, in fact. You just don't get it, Bob, and you probably never will. Disagree with policy. I have no problem with that. Spread lies and disparage and belittle someone for trying to make a difference, I do have a problem with that. That's why I served. To defend the CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS of anyone who wants to make a difference, or live their life as they see fit without impacting the rights of anyone else. Like I said earlier, if you don't like it, act to change it. Run for elective office on your own ideas and ideals. I dare you! Don't ever question my patriotism or service to this country. The name-calling in your post is the biggest symptom that your brand of political hatred needs to end. Indeed, I doubt that you have taken any oath to support or defend this country. If you had, you would have been more respectful in your response. [ Report Abuse ]

Just because WE did not fall hook line and sinker into the LIES that Obama made during his campaign, we are mindless, cannot think for ourselves goober's huh? Hey JO, how dare you accuse someone that doesn't agree to bow before Obama of having no thoughts of their own! Because we don't feel Obama is the savior, we're somehow parroting a radio host? How dare you insult those of us who do not believe what he stands for. Somehow now we've lost the right to a dissenting opinion? How dare you insult those of us who have taken an oath to defend our constitution. There are many who have laid their lives on the line to secure your freedoms, who do not appreciate the direction this administration is going. Run for office? I'd never get your vote. Do yourselves a favor and listen to Rush Limbaugh. His proganda will make you believe that World War II Germany is alive and well. However, it's best to believe the opposite of what he says. Be very cautious though, he has created a band of blind followers. They call themselves "Ditto Heads". I don't know if he shares his oxycotin with them or if they just don't have the ability to think on their own. Nonetheless, he has brainwashed much of the country and you too could fall victim. Remember, he almost made some of us think that Sarah Palin would make a good vice-president. [ Report Abuse ]

Digging out of the Bush hole? How can anyone figure that, especially someone who calls themselves a republican. Since he took office his policies have lost over 3 million jobs with more being lost daily and no end in sight? Remember that he said his stimulus package would top unemployment out at 8%. We flew by that and are at 10% and climbing. Since he took office, he has complied with his spending a deficit of 1.4 trillion, OVER 3X that of any year that Bush was president. And he is forcasting a deficit of 1 trillion a year for the next 10, and this before health care!! "US Gov. Files for Bankruptcy" Since he took office, he has appointed HIS general for Afganistan and then when is asked for the resources to win, has dillydallied with providing the help! Since he took office he has been more enamoured with playing President, than actually being president. Sounds to me that he hasn't dug us out of the hole that Bush left, but has dug a much deeper one of his own. [ Report Abuse ]

Man, you really need to educate yourself before looking like a total fool (uneducated fool at that). Where are all the jobs he promised? I agree with GG totally! Thomas, excellent post (said very sarcastically). Your post speaks volumes about the people who voted for Obama. Yes, majority, by all of 1%. That means that 49% of this country still needs a voice and deserves to be heard. I moved to Madison about 5 years ago and had heard of the political machine running here. Of all the places I've lived, I've never had political opinion shoved down my throat as I have here. I've never been exposed to things such as poeple's feelings of entitlement, privelge, racism, and downright backstabbing in any other place I've lived. I've lived in the deep south, out west, northeast, and all of those places seem to have more tollerance than Madison. I don't care if you don't like my ideas or political stance, but you HAVE to listen. Its what this country is founded on. Its not about democrats "taking the country back." Its not yours to take. We all live here and all deserve to have our opinions heard and acted upon. Get off your high horse. [ Report Abuse ]

I agree, he needs to be staying in Washington rather than flying around on OUR dime. I think he was elected to run the country, not run Air Force One into the ground with his too many public appearances. We have troops being killed in the Middle East, top advisor's telling him "we need more troops" and our Commander In Chief (using that term loosely) basically turning a deaf ear to their requests. He lied so many times during his campaign that it's almost laughable. A transparent Governement? What happened to that? Putting bills on line for the public to view and respond to. What ever happened to that? Eliminating pork from bills. What ever happened to that? Listen folks, like every other President, he is a politician first and foremost. Will lie through his teeth to get what he wants. NOT the great saviour that everyone was counting on. [ Report Abuse ]

And no, I didn't like Bush nor McCain either to answer the other blowhards with even more unintelligent comments. Obama is nothing but a fake and fraud who will never be able to keep even half of his campaign promises to all the suckers that voted for him. With the bailouts, all he was doing is paying back those who elected him into office, he has done little next to none to help out our economy or the people, everything he says or does is all smoke 'n mirrors, and a lot of half truths. This guy will be lucky to last another year in office if he isn't impeached or led out the door of office by good, angry Americans, that are fed up with him, his cronies, and his policies. I don't need $100 to tell this loser of a president how absolutely lazy he has been in fixing the major problems of yesterday, today, and the future. He is coming here to speak about the American education system?! Then he should know that the next major economic recession will be that of student debt. College graduates will not be able to stabilize the mortgage crisis when they already have mortgage payments for tuition debt. How does the price of education keep rising while income is decreasing? Again, I thought conservatives were looking to work with this president. That was a point of emphasis from Mr. Steele and the rest of the GOP earlier this year. Obama unveils the race to the top program here in Madison....looking to hold teachers accountable, improve standardized tests, close failing schools, provide federal grants. It would seem that this is an area where conservatives could work with the president if they really wanted to. But at this point, the GOP hasn't indicated any willingness to do so. I don't know what else they are looking for with regards to the program. They haven't said. It creates the impression that contrary to their statements, the GOP isn't looking to work with the President on anything.

Steve @ 09:16, he did not quadruple the deficit. It may have gone up, but the president does not have the power to create jobs, create wealth for others, levy taxes, or increase/decrease a federal deficit. While I do not like Obama, it's not fair to blame the deficit on a president, past or present. This is the work of an uncontrolled and virtually uncontrollable congress. As for the school visit, I bet those kids were incredibly excited, and I don't blame them. I can only imagine how they felt being able to have the president in their school. Congratulations to those kids for the opportunity!

Is GOP against the program Obama announced yesterday? Against holding teachers accountable? Against improving standardized tests? Against closing down failing schools? Seems like an area both parties agree and could work together if the GOP truly wants to work with Obama like they claim they do.

It is a great honor for our president to visit. Anyone who thinks otherwise should be ashamed. And, for those of you concerned with the cost......President Bush flew over 200 times a year in his 8 year term.....almost 2000 flights in his 8 year term. I'm thinking that probably cost the American people money as well. To all you Republicans: could this man do anything to make you happy?

His stimulus bill only stopped our country from falling into another great depression. He's working on reforming health care, and closer to that goal than anyone has been in decades. The race to the top program he talked about today looks to improve our countries public education...taking ideas that some conservatives have been advocating (i.e. basing teacher pay on student performance). Replaced a justice on the supreme court. Working on a new war plan for Afghanistan. But yeah...other than that... he hasn't done anything :P
