Information from Rock County Sheriff's Office:

On Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at 4:42PM, deputies from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office, officers from Evansville Police Department, along with members from Brooklyn and Evansville Fire and EMS responded to a rollover traffic crash with injury on North USH 14, four-tenths of a mile north of W. Holt road.

Additional information relayed one of the subjects in a vehicle was pinned. This crash occurred in Union Township, located in northwestern Rock County, which is approximately 4.4 miles north of Evansville, Wisconsin.

Emergency Personnel began arriving on scene at 4:49PM. North and Southbound traffic for USH 14 were closed and diverted from 4:49PM until 6:29PM.

Preliminary investigation revealed a 1989 Mercury Sable driven by Beauford Udell, age 84, of Beloit, WI, was southbound on USH 14 when he failed to navigate a slight right curve in the road entering northbound traffic. Udell’s vehicle collided with a northbound 2002 GMC Envoy driven by Mary Flaherty, age 51, Evansville, WI.

In an attempt to avoid this crash, Flaherty made an evasive maneuver steering right towards the gravel shoulder. Udell’s front driver’s side struck Flaherty’s driver’s side rear quarter panel. Flaherty’s vehicle overturned several times coming to rest on its passenger side in the northbound lane of traffic for USH 14.

Flaherty’s vehicle traveled approximately 153 feet from point of impact. Flaherty had to be extricated from her vehicle and was transported by Med Flight Helicopter to University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, Wis., with incapacitating injuries.

Udell was able to control and steer his vehicle to the gravel shoulder on USH 14 and was not injured. Udell’s vehicle traveled 464 feet from point of impact. Both Flaherty and Udell were wearing seatbelts. Alcohol and speed are not contributing factors with this crash.

Further investigation is pending and information will be released via press release or when the associated reports are submitted, completed, and approved.

Driving is a difficult skill. Many decisions are made in seconds and people make mistakes. Most of the time when we make a driving mistake, no one is hurt. We catch ourselves in time, correct the error and thank God it did not cause the accident. That was not the case in this accident. We call it an accident because no one intended to harm one another. I know the family of the victim in this case and the victim and her husband hold no malice towards the driver who crossed the center line and intend to tell him so some day. They are moving forward and are thankful to still have each other. They appreciate the efforts of the rescue crews and the flight for life team. The staff at U.W. Madison are compassionate and highly skilled. The community has rallied around the family and is doing what ever is necessary to support them. It is time to heal...and help those who need compassion and healing.

Do I feel awful for the families involved…yes. Do I feel that many people here are unjustifiably targeting older drivers…yes. My comments aren't ignorant as some have stated. I just stated the "facts" (unlike many others here) that there is a large variety of ages of drivers who cause accidents and I'm not willing to state that due to some people's driving, then everyone in that category must endure the consequences. And Brenda, poor Brenda, your last blog states that you were only commenting on this one story, but yet you agreed with Ryan who stated that "...elderly drivers and their inability to competently operate an automobile?" That means he is talking about all elderly drivers not just the one in this story. Again, I feel sorry for everyone in all the stories that I stated and wish these incidents hadn't happen. But everyone will read into my comments as they wish to, not as I've typed. And sadly I understand the emotions people have when a loved one is killed or injured in an MVC
