MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- President Barack Obama's visit to Wisconsin Wednesday will be the first stop in Madison by a sitting president in over a half century.

The last presidential visit to the capital city was made by President Harry Truman in May 1950 when he delivered a speech at the UW Field House. Truman talked about international unity among the world's free nations in the face of a communist threat. The Korean War broke out just weeks after Truman's visit to Wisconsin.

Obama, former presidents Bill Clinton, John Kennedy and other former chief executives have visited Madison, making campaign appearances, but not while they occupied the Oval Office.

Given the taxpayer expense in the form of Police presence / removing them from there normal duty’s, and the cost to the US taxpayer to fly One person on a 747 jumbo jet just so the sitting president can campaign is a complete disgrace and misuse of tax dollars. I hope it is at least 2050 before we see this happen in Dane county again!

I am sorry....but any president should visit every state in a 4 year term...especially an 8 year term. That shouldn't be a gift, that should be a given. They are representing the people of this country!! It shouldn't just be the star athletes, movie stars etc.

I think the race to the top program the President talked about today is one which republicans can support. I hope they do. Seems like a good idea to me.
