What would Thom say to the ignorant, cruel individuals who left heartless comments on here? He would probably say he felt sorry for them and their hardened hearts. He would realize (whether THEY realize it or not) that they are living meaningless, awful lives and any comments made by them mean nothing-- He would hope that they would find a way to bring positive out in the world for themselves and others. I believe all of us who love Thom should feel the same: simply sorry for the people who wrote such cruel comments. They do not have love in their hearts or true joy in their lives, and sadly they probably don't even know it. Thom was a rare individual who truly and sincerely made this world a better place by being in it. Those of us who were fortunate to have had him in our lives will always keep "Thom" in our hearts and we will continue to brighten the world as he did.Only those of us who knew and loved Thom can really understand the truthfulness of this statement. I love you, Thom.

I know, it saddens me to think that there are evil people out there that have nothing better to do with their time. Maybe if they surrounded themselves with more people like Tom, they would have a brighter outlook on life and spend their energy doing nice things for people instead of spreading cruelness through anonymous postings. We were blessed to have had Tom in our lives and I feel sorry for "wakeuppeople" & "OSHA". I pray that no one in the Schmitt Family ever sees these hurtful remarks. Happy Veterans Day, THANK YOU Sgt. Schmitt, Semper Fi

Hey, "OSHA"... I'm pretty sure the Occupational Safety and Health Administration doesn't have the power to regulate the self-employed. They are there to ensure that all employees of, say, Wal-Mart or General Motors, are safe on the job when those employees work for big corporations, not themselves.

To Carrie, you are so right about Tom. I am family and will do ANYTHING to protect his name as would you. Tom was just such a fun person to be around, point blank and for someone to even say something so down right cruel is just wrong. How can you...wakeuppeople inhumane ***************** even say those things. I hope you are not some sicko just trying to get a rise out of people too by the way. This is a very hard time for all of Tom's family and friends, my gosh where where my frined lives a girl tripped and fell into the street and was struck by a car...can she fix stupid??? I am so angry with you wakeuppeople, I wish I could really say what I feel but obviously I can't. AS I said, If you are jsut trying to get a rise out of people, that is sick and wrong and not only do you owe Tom an apology, but also his family and friends!!

dear wakeuppeople, I'm sure that you are perfect and have lived your life doing everything by the book, right? I am in total shock right now. I couldn't imagine leaving judgmental comments and name calling on a tragic story like this. Especially when you obviously didn't know the person, because if you did you would have NEVER said such things. Tom was a great friend who was always there when you needed him, selflessly put his life on the line, protecting our country, fighting in Iraq. He loved his family and friends unconditionally. Here are some FACTS for you: at his funeral yesterday, there was standing room only, that flowed outside from every doorway and not a dry eye in the entire place. It was a beautiful ceremony with people there from all over the country. No one cared about what "could have" or "should have" been done, all we know is that we LOVE him and MISS him with all our hearts. It was a privledge to say he was a part of my life. I don't know how you sleep at night..

TOm was my cousin and all the negative comments are just not needed right now. TOm was a wonderful person, excellent Marine and a great all around person. To the person who said you can't fix stupid, you should really post your name cause I guarentee that you will have many angry family, friends and fellow MArines that will fix you stupid!!! Tom does not deserve to have those comments posted about him and neither does our family need to read them. YOu are a cold hearted person.

Dear wakeuppeople, Amazing analysis of the scene of the accident. So amazing that you would think that you were right there...but you weren't were you? You have no idea what happened in those minutes leading up to the accident. You have no idea if he was physically on a roof or on a ladder (because there are conflicting news reports) or what kind of equipment he was using or even what he was doing (working or climbing) at the exact moment he lost his balance. For you to assume that this accident happened because he was "cutting corners" is just wrong. Have a little compassion. This man was only 32 years old and his family is grieving the loss. And if you want to call him "stupid" you should look in the mirror. Use initial caps and proper grammar in your post; without them you come off as uneducated. Finally, maybe you should thank Thomas for serving our country and protecting our freedom and rights...like freedom of speech...that you are using to bash him.

As a EMT in the madison area we see alot of falls. the fall from a roof depending first or second story is 10-20 feet. anything twice your height can have potential for serious injury and even death as in this case. It also depends how you land as well. Accidents do happen and its sad he lost his life from it. RIP. And OSHA would have or could not have done anything at all for this so its pretty pointless to even bring them into it. Might want to educate your self what OSHA is.

Although I did not know him, I am saddened to see the previous comments in regards to OSHA and the responses to the person who posted their comment. I am thinking back to early September when our community was hit by a similar sudden and tragic accident. This venue was a great place to find solace in the type of person that man was. It was not a place for negativity. So with that being said, I am quite certain that the members of this gentleman's family, friends, fellow soldiers he served our country with, and community members would appreciate people not using this as a place to lash out or correct each other. PLEASE KEEP THAT IN MIND WHEN YOU DECIDED TO COMMENT ON THIS PERSON'S LIKE OR ANY OTHER PERSONS. REST IN PEACE TOM.

thisis what happens most of te time when people try and cut corners, bet he was working off a ladder. in which they state that it is illeagal but many people do cause they think they are so good they wont fall. and cost to use a lift or scafolding are lot more expensive. do feel sorry for the famiuly yes but accidents are avoidable but you cant fix stupid.

how could OSHA have prevented this? This is just a tragic/freak accident that can't be prevented. My thoughts and prayers to his family.

Hey "OSHA": I would LOVE to know what information you are exclusively privey to that makes you think that this accident could have been prevented. If you know ANYTHING about the REAL osha, you know that sometimes accidents happen EVEN when ALL preventative measures are in place. Dont blame the victim...you sound as heartless and self-righteous as an insurance company!

To the woman who called this into 911: under the circumstances, you were amazing and your obvious compassion while trying to help did not go unnoticed. There are many things I might like to say, but obviously cannot other than to say: you were there with him, so he was not alone, thank you for your quick action and willingness to do what needed to be done. My heart-felt sympathies to all affected by this tragic event.

If you don't have anything positive to say, then keep your comments to yourselves please...my heart goes out to this man's family and friends.

OSHA: stupid comment. Do you even know all the circumstances surrounding this incident to know that it could have been prevented? You comment does no good hear. Keep it to yourself.
