UPDATED Tuesday, November 22, 2011 --- 12:01 p.m.

JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) -- A Beloit man convicted of killing one man and seriously wounding another in a shooting two years ago has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of early release.

Antonio Mance was convicted in July of the shooting death of Derrick Kimber and wounding of Martell Rodgers. Rock County Circuit Court Judge James Daley also sentenced Mance to 40 consecutive years in prison and 20 years of extended supervision Monday on the attempted homicide charge.

The Beloit Daily News says the 29-year-old Mance continued to maintain his innocence. Court documents say he stood in the middle of the street on Nov. 24, 2009 armed with two guns and fired into the windshield of a car before moving to its driver's side door and shooting additional rounds. Kimber was killed, but Rodgers survived.

Release from Rock County District Attorney:

Antonio Lavel Mance, age 28, was found guilty today after a week long jury trial before the Honorable James P. Daley in Rock County Circuit Court Case No. 2009CF3118 of the crimes of First Degree Intentional Homicide, which is a class A felony and carries a mandatory life sentence, and Attempted First Degree Intentional Homicide, which is a class B felony which carries a possible 60 additional years imprisonment. Based upon the convictions, Judge Daley revoked Mance’s bond and scheduled sentencing for October 26, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. At sentencing, Judge Daley will determine if and when Mance will become eligible for extended supervision (i.e. parole) on the life sentence. Judge Daley will also sentence Mance on the second count and determine whether that sentence will run concurrently or consecutively to the life sentence.

Mance was found guilty of the November 24, 2009 shooting that had occurred in the area of Porter and Keeler in Beloit, Rock County, Wisconsin. Trial testimony showed that Mance was observed standing in the southbound lane of Porter shooting into a vehicle twenty-two (22) times. Mance shot and killed Derrick Kimber, who was the driver of the vehicle, and attempted to cause the death of Martell Rodgers, who was the front seat passenger in the vehicle.

Beloit: Around 1 p.m. a man was driving a silver car northbound on Porter Avenue in Beloit. As he crossed Randall Street more than 10 shots were fired from the west side of the street.

The driver made it another two blocks before losing control, running into a power pole and then crashing into a number of cars in the parking lot of Merrill Elementary.

One neighbor says she thought she heard 15 gunshots. "I came upstairs and all I heard was a lot of gunshots. It was crazy," says Ajia Wiley. "I saw people running towards the scene and I saw the guy pulling off in his car."

The driver has been identified as 22 year old Derick Kimber. Gretchen Thurman says Kimber is her husband and the father of her two children.
She got a call in the afternoon. "Somebody telling me that my husband was shot and I got here, they told me he was ok and I get to the hospital he's dead. They say somebody just walked up out of nowhere and just started shooting him."

Beloit Police say a 24 year old man was also shot and taken to the hospital. It's not clear if he was in the car when the shooting happened.

Merrill Elementary went into lockdown while police searched for suspects. Beloit Schools Security and Safety Coordinator Dan Stauffacher says he got there shortly after the school went into lockdown. "It was quite a mess. There was like 5 or 6 cars that were damaged, one car was pretty smashed up. I think officers were working on one of the people from the car doing CPR on him."

Gretchen says they moved here from Chicago five years ago. "We don't have any enemies. And for this to just happen out of nowhere, I just don't understand why."

Beloit Police say they have identified a suspect but no one is in custody.

Merrill School on Lockdown in Response to Community Incident

Beloit, WI – Early this afternoon, a shooting occurred in a Beloit neighborhood several blocks away from Merrill Elementary School. Though no children or School District staff members were injured as a result of these events, a vehicle allegedly involved in the incident damaged several cars within the Merrill staff parking lot. The school was immediately placed in a lockdown status after being notified by police of these events in accordance with standard emergency procedures. School officials contacted parents and advised them that they could retrieve their children if they wished.

Like many of our primary schools, Merrill Elementary is an integral part of the local neighborhood fabric. When tragic incidents like this occur, we are reminded of the fragility of that relationship and the need to remain focused on our primary responsibility; that being the physical safety of our students and staff.
