MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Deputies have arrested a deer hunter after he allegedly shot into a house.

Dane County Sheriff officials say a couple and their adult son were in their town of Burke home on Tuesday afternoon when they heard what sounded like an explosion in the kitchen. They found a hole in the wall and a shotgun slug on the floor. No one was injured.

The homeowner noticed two hunters in a field outside his home. One of them, a 46-year-old Windsor man, said he had shot at a deer and lost his footing, possibly sending a round into the home. The hunter said he was about 1,000 yards from the home when he took the shot.

The sheriff's office says deputies discovered the hunter was under the influence of alcohol.

Release from the Dane Co. Sheriff's Office:

Man Arrested After Shooting Into House

Madison, WI. November 25, 2009 – At approximately 1:40 pm on Tuesday, November 24th, Dane County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a residence on the 4000 block of STH 19 in the town of Burke. The caller reported a shotgun slug had just struck his house.

A couple and their adult son were inside their home when they heard what sounded like an explosion in the kitchen. When they went to see what happened they found a hole in the wall and a shotgun slug lying on the kitchen floor. The homeowner immediately noticed two hunters in a field southwest of his home, whom he made contact with.

One of the hunters, Michael A. Berkholtz, age 46 of Windsor, stated he had shot at a deer and lost his footing, possibly sending another round into the home. According to Berkholtz’s statements, he was approximately 1000 yards from the home when he took the shot. After further investigation, deputies discovered Berkholtz was under the influence of alcohol, and he was transported to a local hospital for a blood draw.

Berkholtz was arrested for Reckless Endangerment. The three residents in the home at the time of the incident were not injured.

Did they publish any other punishment given to this guy, like from the DNR? Hopefully they took away his hunting priveleges and his right to possess a firearm for 10 years or more.

Anonymous: So what if his BAC was below 0.08? He still was "hunting" while impaired. Charge could have been manslaugher. You and Bj seem to feel that drinking and hunting is acceptable, either because he was under the limit, or because everyone does it. Maybe one of you was his hunting partner? If someone wants to drink, they should do it AFTER hunting for the day is over. Under the legal BAC, huh? Arrested at 1:40pm. Odds are he would have been a 0.12 by 5pm. "Your Honor!" "I was shafted!! That mean Sheriff and the people I almost killed are picking on me!" "Whaa. Enable me some more! The system is unfair. Waaa!" The guy is a dangerous loser...... Let him have his day in court, and I hope it is a very long day, especially if he has other drug/alcohol arrests. They say it takes 5000 times speeding to get a ticket, on average. Odds are this is not the first time this guy has had a loaded weapon in his hands while impaired.

Type of guy who gives hunters a bad name. I'm betting his family wishes they could patch up the family as easily as the folks who own that home. Plaster and paint wont patch up that relationship like it will the house. Hope he doesn't have kids, as he may influence them. Hope the judge doesn't buy his whine and dance. Freedom isn't free. It takes some responsibility, which doesn't have.
