For those trying to decide if they can drive or if they've had too much to drink the iPhone is trying to help.
Believe it or not there's an app for that.
No matter how many warnings, how many examples, or how many close calls, people continue to make tragic mistakes.
Madison Police Sergeant Phil Moore says, "I think in Wisconsin it's a constant battle with drunk driving for the police."
It's a problem always under the spotlight on New Year's Eve but it is a problem that exists all year long.
Now there is one more tool out there designed to help. An iPhone app called R-U-Buzzed?
The Colorado State Department of Transportation developed the program and it can be downloaded for free from any iPhone.
Just enter your weight, how long you've been drinking and how many drinks you've had and it gives you an estimated blood alcohol content and a suggestion.
We went to Erin’s Snug Irish Pub in Madison to test it out and see what people think.
Kate Kaminski says, "I think if you're going to use it in the right way it would be a good thing."
Tad Doerflinger says, "Oh it's great. It's a good thing I think."
Members of law enforcement say it could be a useful tool but they're quick to point out it's not a perfect solution or completely accurate measure.
Moore says, "If people are trying to make the decision am I OK to drive or not that's probably the first indicator that they should be thinking about getting someone else to drive."
One worry with applications like this is that it could become more of a drinking game with people trying to see how quickly they can get their blood alcohol to climb.
Once the drinks start flowing there is no substitute for common sense.
Doerflinger says, "You kind of know whether you are over the limit or not or even close to it."
And getting behind the wheel after drinking is a chance not worth taking on New Year's Eve or any other day of the year.
Once again if you're interested in the program, just go to your iPhone app store and search for R-U-Buzzed?

If you think Wisconsin's DWI laws are too lenient, take a look at Colorado's.
How about doing us all a favor and don't go out and drink unless you have a designated driver. An app for that isn't meant to be accurate especially for people who have already consumed alcohol which will only result in innacurate numbers especially for the average person who aren't likely to count the number of drinks, jot down the percent of alcohol content, or remember when and how often they've gone to the rest room to relieve themselves. Geesh..how ironic!
