During the early morning hours of the New Year, several vehicle break-ins occurred in both the Village and Township of Cottage Grove resulting in thousands of dollars of damage and stolen items.
Most reports indicate that a window was broken out to gain entry
into the vehicle. Mostly smaller electronics were taken from vehicles including iPods and GPS systems. The thieves also targeted other items left in the vehicles, including wrapped holiday gifts.
In the Village of Cottage Grove, eleven vehicles were broken into on the following streets:
Sandpiper Tr, Donegal Dr, Killian Tr, Cork Crossing St, Lindsay Ct, Parkview St, School Rd, E School Rd, and Yarrow Hill.
In the Town of Cottage Grove, three vehicles were broken into on the following streets: Circle High St, Thrush La and Falcon Ct.
The Cottage Grove Police Department is investigating these thefts and encourages anyone with information to call the Cottage Grove Police Department at 255-2345 or Madison Area Crime
Stoppers at 266-6014.
We also encourage citizens to remove valuables from vehicles, or lock them in the trunk: out of site. Items left on seats, or in plain view can be appealing to thieves, and are easily accessible once entry is gained. If you have been a victim, we ask that you contact the Cottage Grove Police Department so that we have a more accurate number of
actual break-ins that are occurring.

D, I think if the CGPD hired more police they could protect you better. They could hire one for every street. No wait, better yet the could hire one for every home. Sorry, that would BE STUPID. Chris is exactly right. CG residents need to step it up and help themselves. This isn't some imaginary TV show.
Our car was also broken into that morning. Our GPS was not in the car but the equipment was and we think that is what made us a target. On the 3rd we noticed our cigarette lighter did NOT work and our Horn was mute. Our Fuse/circuit box was tampered with. Just a word of advice to those who were targeted to check your fuse/circuit box. Also, to comment on the trunk aspect of the story, we had wrapped presents in our trunk which were also stolen. I agree the trunk is NOT a safe way to hide valuable goods.
As a victim of this crime it seems that Craigs List and E Bay could go far in helping to catch these criminals. Also, with a GPS that I have the serial number for, it seems like this could be tracked just like on-star can track a stolen vehicle from the GPS. I sure hope that some effort is put into this. I feel VERY violated.
