LUXEMBURG, Wis. (AP) — Eight Wisconsin students have been disciplined after photos of them drinking were posted on Facebook.

Principal Steve Okoniewski said Friday the Luxemburg-Casco High School students have been found in violation of the school's code of conduct.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette says five students were athletes, and will miss half an athletic season. Others will be required to perform community service.

School officials say legal action is also possible.

Okoniewski says the photos came to officials' attention after an individual brought them forward.

He says some students may feel that officials are violating their privacy by punishing them based on Facebook photos. But he says students need to understand nothing in social networking is truly private.

They shouldn't have the non-athletes do community service. They should just tell the local police to keep a close eye on them. And when they do catch them be sure to take their driving priveledges away until their 18. Team suspension and community service is nothing more then a "time out".

I can't see where I said it was a "random check". I also did not say they were crossing the line by punishing the athletes. They sign a code of conduct each year when playing a sport and the mere presence at a drinking party violates that. I do see a problem with them punishing non-student athletes (maybe they could try having the school counselor talk to them instead). They never signed any agreement with the school regarding drinking (or any other activity for that matter) off school grounds. I not saying I think underage drinking is acceptable, but we can’t allow the schools to overreach their boundaries. As for the police, maybe I'm wrong, but I doubt they can hand out underage tickets by just seeing a photo with an individual holding a beer. That's just not the way our legal system works, like it or not.

Some of you people need to stop the whining. And many of you need to read the story so your comments make sense. Jill, It wasn't a random check of facebook. They were going on a tip. There is nothing wrong with checking facebook after you get word there is pictures of your high school athletes drinking. By the way, community service is better than the alternative. If the police would have found them it would have effected their driving priveledges.
