Two big developments were on the agenda at Monday night's Plan Commission meeting.
The first: the Edgewater Hotel redevelopment project. But that item was delayed after the group behind the project, the Hammes Company, unveiled a redesign last week.
The other item: bringing Target to Hilldale Mall.
With no one in opposition to the development, the commission moved to a public hearing.
Company representative Jaci Bell says, " We've had neighborhood meetings in taking a great deal of comments in through the alder and importing those into our project. "
Architects, engineers and company representatives answered questions from the commission on a slew of topics from overall design to storm water runoff.
Civil Engineer Gretchen Landini says, " In addition the height of the detention system has been increased so that it detains up to a 100-year storm leaving the site. "
But the majority of the questions focused on pedestrian and vehicle traffic. For example: whether Madison Metro planning on putting a bus stop closer to the facility's planned entrance to accommodate shoppers and employees.
Bell says, " We're not at all opposed to moving it and that's something that when we work through with the construction documents as it relates to the University Avenue we could move it. "
After only an hour and half, the commission decided to give the project their backing - clearing one of the final and largest hurdles for the project.
City Council will take up the matter at their March 2nd meeting.
If approved construction could begin in a few months and open the store could open in the spring of 2011.

THIS SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT LOCATION FOR THE STUDENTS IN MAD. HAVE YOU EVERY HAD TO RIDE THE BUS ROUTE TO THE FAR WEST OR EAST SIDE TARGET? THIS SUCKS! IT SOUNDS LIKE THE NEW ONE WILL HAVE GROCERYS TOO! I GUESS IT JUST ENDS UP BEING CLOSER FOR ME AND I LOVE TARGET.
Curious, we shouldn't be so quick to make decisions based on need. It's a slippery slope that results in lost liberties. Desire should be the reason to make a decision like this. And so long as their choice doesn't impact my ability to make choices, I support them.
Why does a city of 250,000 people need 4 Target Stores? I predict with in 5 years at least will be closed by corporate for not making enough money.
