Incident Report from the Madison Police Department:
Several Madison Police officers responded to a conservancy area in the 4300 block of Beilfuss Drive Sunday afternoon after a witness spotted a group of teenagers running into the wooded area carrying guns. Officers, with guns drawn, prepared to determine what was happening when one of the young people's father arrived. He told the officers the teens were just playing with Airsoft guns. An officer ordered the man's son out of the woods with his hands up. All of the teens were very cooperative and apologetic after being told how dangerous it is to be running around in a public place with weapons that look real. The officer used his discretion, and because the young people were so cooperative, he did not cite them.

Well until concealed carry becomes legal in WI open carry is the only way you can exercise your right to bear arms. Just because somebody calls the police isn't sufficient reason to issue a disorderly conduct ticket. Having an unholstered gun -- or an airsoft gun that looks real-- and running around with it certainly is taking a risk however. If you want to carry a real gun for your protection, do it. Just carry it openly and stay out of the 5 places in WI you can't have it: bars, cars, state parks, government buildings and school zones.
"Name", the reason you shouldn't carry openly, but should be able to carry concealed, is because some people find it disturbing when someone has a gun. And I believe that is precisely what Doyle has in mind by his reluctance to allow concealed carry. He knows honest people who carry concealed are responsible and law abiding people no more inclined to violence than if they had no weapon at all. But by continuing the ban on concealed carry, and promoting the open carry display, he can count on a sheep calling for the cops when someone has a gun in the open. And then there will be a disorderly conduct charge which could jeopardize that person's ability to ever earn a concealed carry permit anywhere. Yeah, please convince me this isn't what his plan is.
Seriously, airsoft is a great sport but you have to play smart and responsibly. playing public places is a quick way to end up on the business end of real gun. case in point. this is the stuff that gives airsoft a bad name. they're lucky that the cop was smart. i love airsoft. save it for the airsoft field. if the guns look real, they can still get charged with brandishing. play smart and responsibly. www.airsplat.com/airsoft-safety.htm
