When a prescription drug overdose killed an Edgerton teen it opened a lot eyes.
Now one man is on a crusade to stop the problem by putting every medicine cabinet he can under lock and key.
The solution so simple it's hard to believe more people aren't already doing it.
Ken Kidder says, "This is the only good remedy for it is keep your drugs under lock and key."
Kidder, like many in Edgerton was heartbroken when a prescription drug overdose killed a local teen.
He says, "Mostly it's the shock effect in the public that this can happen in our community or any community."
Now he's hoping the death of Alex Aiken will send people into action, putting prescription drugs under lock and key.
Ken spent years of his life in a workshop perfecting woodworking projects. But when it comes to a medicine cabinet lock, it's so simple anyone can do it.
He says, "Ten minutes if you're good at it."
And in the case of Alex Aiken it may have been enough to save his life.
Rock County investigators believe the 14-year-old charged in his death got the prescription drugs from a relative who never knew they were missing.
Kidder says, "All I can do is make public awareness. Beyond that people have to make their own lifestyle decisions."
Kidder is willing to demonstrate for anyone who wants to install a lock themselves and eventually hopes to push his plan by joining with volunteer organizations.
Milton Police, for one, are already using their Facebook page to pass along Kidder's ideas and ask if anyone in their city would be willing to start a similar program.
Kidder says, "This is a simple lock installation."
A simple start to fixing a deadly problem.

This is a good idea but there is a big caveat. If you lock the cabinet, what do you do with the key? If the key is on your key chain or is a "special" hiding spot, the kids still have access to the drugs. (Trust me, you kids will find the hiding spot). So if you do lock the cabinet, be conscious of where you put the key. Another slightly more expensive solution would be using a combination or keypad lock. Then there is no key and only you know the combination. Another handy solution is to lock your drugs in a small safe. Studies show the worst place to store drugs is the bathroom. Heat and humidity from showering dramatically effects the stability of drugs. Locking them in a safe in another room is a much better storage location. I recently bought a biometric safe that opens using a finger print scanner. I dont even have to remember a combination, just push the button, let it scan, and open it. It only cost $150 and was worth every penny.
I suppose my question is where did these kids learn about these drugs. Living in Edgerton I see a lot of adult with drug and alcohol problems and if out adult "role models" are at the bar every Friday night, and Saturday and Sunday, what are our kids think is right.
we seem to assume this is a proablem that just affects children, locking up drugs without asking why so manny docs are handing them out like candy and so manny of us "need" them might be a better use of time.
