Big Vote - Huge Consequences
All around our state, cash-strapped school districts are asking their property owners for more money. Brodhead is next.

Wisconsin has 426 school districts. Last fall, 50 of them held referenda to raise taxes. This spring another 47 will, including Brodhead.
"This school could save a lot of money and stop wasting all the money with some of the stuff they buy around here," said Jim Streuly.
"I don't think this is an issue so much of Brodhead mishandling their funds. I think it is a big state issue," Trish Hoesly replied.
The opinions are many. But, the choices are few - yes or no.
Brodhead School District needs money. A combination of state-imposed revenue caps and a decline in student enrollment has greatly strained their budget. The only way they can raise money is to increase taxes. And the only way they can do that is by referendum.
A referendum to raise property taxes in Brodhead was already held in February. It failed. Around 150 people gathered at the school Monday to listen, learn and share their thoughts on another referendum, which will be in just a few weeks.
If the referendum fails the school will have to cut more than a million dollars out of their budget. Eight teachers, two administrators, a guidance councilor, and many programs will be gone.
"This is the first time that Brodhead has gone to a referendum to exceed the revenue caps, which our neighbors have done many times," added Peggy Olsen, the School Board President. "So, as far as financially we have done a good job."
"If you give all these big raises to the superintendent and the principals and that and then you turn around and ask the tax payers for more money. I really don't agree on that," stated Streuly.
"I feel real strongly about getting this referendum passed so that our kids aren't hurt while we're waiting for bigger issues to get changed at the state and federal levels for funding," concluded Hoesly.
The first vote failed by 55 to 45 percent. In order for this new one to pass about 300 people have to change their votes.
That vote will take place during the spring elections on April 6th.

Anonymous 07:58 Id like to ask you this. Under your philosophy, only the people using the services should pay for them. So you are saying only parents should pay for schools. So then shouldnt we extend that idea to other areas. Im not a criminal so why should I pay for prisons? If I didnt own a car, why should I pay for road building and maintenance? If my house isnt on fire why should I pay for fire/rescue service? My point is public education means we ALL share the expense even if we do not use the service. And 30 years from now Im going to probably be in a nursing home and I want an intelligent young person taking care of me, not some idiot who didnt get a decent education because people said no to spending money on schools to educate them. Im not trying to criticize you, but I thought you might want to think about your idea from a different perspective. What public services do you use that other people dont use but are paying for?
Can I just ask... why can't we approach some of the big corps in the area to help fund local schools? Think of all the office equipment that is tossed that could go to a school and be used instead of sitting in a landfill; why can't the schools be "sponsored" by corporations and receive money to offset some of the budget shortfalls? I have no idea if this is practical but I see it as a win-win - the schools will get what they need and the corps will get a write-off... Again, not sure it's feasible, but wouldn't that be an awesome situation?? Maybe the corps could have built in interns at the high school level, create career paths for students...
Brodhead...retired and have no place to go? Come to the Brodhead Retirement Village. Not ready to retire? Well, just stop in and watch the tumbleweed races. Brodhead also offers a "School Zone Free" drive. No more worry about balls rolling into the road...all the families have left.
