High School Runners Overcome by Heat, Humidity Save Email Print

A | A | A

The heat and humidity was too much for high school runners at a cross country meet near Palmyra.

Two runners were taken to Waukesha Memorial Hospital with heat exhaustion and many others were treated at the scene. That includes 6 runners who were given fluids intravenously.

Emergency responders from 5 communities were called to the Palmyra-Eagle Invitational in the Kettle Moraine State Forest Southern Unit Tuesday afternoon.

Palmyra Fire Chief Ryan Meyers says the kids were dropping right on the trails.

I think that the schools should be held partially accountable for this. They could have easily rescheduled this. As for the parents of these teens, do you have brains? Who lets their child run in extreme heat!?

I think a law should be passed that would make it illegal to have practice or sporting events when the heat index is at a certain level. Haven't enough children died for people to realize that there will be another day to have the events? Parents & schools are so wrapped up in the competion of high school sports that nobody takes into consideration the health and well being of the kids. The local high school & grade school had football practice for our kids yesterday and I was amazed that none of the parents other than myself were concerned about it.

Do coaches and school authorities have no common sense?
