WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) -- A 32-year-old Marshfield man won't go back to prison for killing his girlfriend after reaching a new plea deal.
Eric Mayer pleaded no contest Monday to felony murder.
Mayer already served 585 days behind bars for the March 2009 death of 43-year-old Cynthia Tyler. He was sentenced Monday to time served.
Mayer admitted he slapped Tyler after an argument in the couple's home. Tyler died the next day of a ruptured artery in her brain.
Mayer initially was sentenced to 10 years in prison but won a bid for a new trial. Daily Herald Media reports the plea deal was arranged after prosecutors discovered that part of Tyler's body was lost during an autopsy.
WSAW-TV reports Mayer was also sentenced to six years and five months on extended supervision.

WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) -- A new plea deal is in the works for a Wisconsin man accused of killing his girlfriend in her Stratford home.
Thirty-two-year-old Eric Mayer, of Marshfield, previously pleaded guilty to felony murder in the March 2009 death of 43-year-old Cynthia Tyler. A judge allowed him to withdraw that plea after Mayer said he didn't realize all the facts prosecutors would have to prove if the case went to trial.
Mayer has been free since he posted a $50,000 bond in October 2011.
Daily Herald Media reports that Mayer is expected in court Monday for a plea and sentencing hearing. He had been expected to go to trial this week.

WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) -- A 29-year-old Marshfield man convicted of killing his girlfriend has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Eric R. Mayer faced a maximum sentence Wednesday of nearly 16 years in prison. But he reached a plea deal with prosecutors, receiving a lighter sentence in exchange for dropping his not-guilty plea and pleading no contest to the felony murder charge.
The Wausau Daily Herald says Mayer was also sentenced to five years of extended supervision.
A message left with Mayer's attorney late Wednesday was not immediately returned.
Mayer was accused of killing 43-year-old Cynthia Tyler at their Stratford home last year. The criminal complaint quotes Mayer as telling investigators he hit Tyler in the face after she kicked him in the mouth during an argument.
