MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Wisconsin Supreme Court has upheld the state's constitutional ban on gay marriage and civil unions.
In a 7-0 ruling, the court on Wednesday ruled the 2006 constitutional amendment was properly put to voters in a statewide referendum.
The court rejected a lawsuit that claimed the amendment violated a rule that limits referendum questions to a single subject. The lawsuit, filed by a voter opposed to the amendment, argued that gay marriage and civil unions were two different subjects.
Justice Michael Gableman says both sentences "carry out the same general purpose of preserving the legal status of marriage in Wisconsin as between only one man and one woman."

I was thinking.. SINCE many on here feel Marriage is SO Sacred..and can ONLY be between a man and woman then I say.. NO DIVORCE EVER you marry you are in it LEGALLY for LIFE...I am sure that is what God would want right??? there are so many sanctimonius people on here that have probably SWITCHED partners more than once..Rush L is on his 4th wife correct?? and many others in the spotlight that condem Gay marriage and Gay rights.. WHAT next BLACKS getting married to WHITES!! OH MY.. yep that was once illegal... seems pretty stupid now doesn't it??.... Just like some day the whole Anti-Gay marriage thing will sound backward and stupid (I hope!)..
"I'm against discrimination against gays/lesbians, I myself am bi, but I will never support gay marriage." -Sierra You will have to excuse me for being rude but I found this comment to be especially ignorant. I am not sure if being bisexual qualifies you to be an expert on what an entire community of people want or deserve. Gay rights is not about sex it is about family. The fact is gay people are not a margin of society; they live and work just like everyone else. And it is because we live in the Land of the Free that so many gay people are raising children and contributing to a society to which they have no right.
to mother of gay son, you ask who are the courts? The courts, as you put it are the ones whom you and I elected, or were appointed by elected officials. They are there because they demostrated an ability to view the laws, and changes to them with a broad scope. Do I agree with all of their decisioins, no. Do I call them names and vilify them when I dont, no. This case was brought to the courts, forcing them to make a ruling. What they saw in this case must have presented a potentially disasterous precedent that could/would ultimately become a pandora's box of sorts. Do I know this for sure, no. to Liz, the correct quote you are looking for is "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;" not seperation of church and state. It means we are free to worship as we please, not forced to be one or the other. Remember why people came to this country from England, religious persecution because they were not Anglican.
