The Wisconsin Innovation Kitchen is the only community accessible kitchen in the country with a built-in food processing staff. And despite the lagging economy, they are thriving while sending an inspirational message.
With recipes like Banana Walnut Muffins and Homemade Campfire S'mores it's not hard to see why people like to shop at the Wisconsin Innovation Kitchen. But, it's what you don't see on the labels that means the most.
The brand new Wisconsin Innovation Kitchen in Mineral Point is a food processing facility and the largest community access kitchen in the region. It gives farmers and food producers the tools to process large quantities of food to be sold commercially in 700 stores across 26 states.
"Because it has been such a success we needed more room. That's when we decided to expand this building," said Tom Schraeder, who's with the kitchen.
Papa Pat's Farm House Recipes is the Wisconsin Innovation Kitchen's brand. It's an ever growing array of soups, jams and cakes put together with a unique touch.
With the expansion, the kitchen will be able to hire 25 to 30 adults who have special needs, and each one will have a food item named after them - like Mitch's Cheesy Vegetable Soup.
"This is very exciting for the community," said Mitchell Hamilton. He just started working for the kitchen packing cookies and making soup mix.
"I like helping out my community as much as I can. With the economy now-a-days there hasn't been much for me to do. But, thanks to the expansion it's helped make me a better person."
"There are so many opportunities for the Wisconsin Innovation Kitchen to have locally grown foods produced and processed into food for sales for the community," concluded Schraeder.
In addition to allowing emerging or established food entrepreneurs access to the facility the Wisconsin Innovation Kitchen also has business and marketing assistance available to it clients.
