UPDATED Tuesday, August 3, 2010 --- 4:55 p.m.
From the Dane County Sheriff's Department:
Madison, WI. August 3, 2010 – The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is now releasing the names of the deputies involved in the two recent officer involved shootings.
In the July 20th incident in the village of McFarland, Tactical Response Team (TRT) members were attempting to place a video camera through a lower level window when Scott D. Stevens fired his handgun at deputies, forcing them to return fire. The deputies who fired their weapons include: Anthony Balistreri (48), with the DCSO for 25 years; Todd Endl (47), 21 years with the DCSO + 7 years of prior law enforcement experience; George Mayerhofer (36) 10 years with the DCSO; and James Plenty (38), 10 years with the DCSO + 6 years of prior law enforcement experience.
In the town of Dunkirk incident on July 28th, patrol deputies responded to a domestic call on Aaker Road where William T. Sorenson had armed himself with a shotgun. Deputies ordered the man to put the gun down, and when he did not comply with the order, one deputy fired a less lethal round at Sorenson. Sorenson then fired his shotgun at deputies, forcing the deputies to return fire. The deputies who fired their weapons in this incident include: Steven French (37) 12 years with the DCSO; Jason Wiest (36) 13 years with the DCSO; Brian McKenzie (36) 12 years with the DCSO; and James Myers (47) 6 years with the DCSO.
As in all officer-involved shootings, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office thoroughly conducts both a criminal and administrative investigation. Dane County District Attorney Brian Blanchard has declared that no criminal liability is possible based on the consistent and extensive evidence that has been assembled since the shootings. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office initial review of the incidents finds that the deputies responded appropriately in these life-threatening situations. The formal administrative review is ongoing for both incidents. As part of the Sheriff’s Office critical incident policy, all of these deputies were placed on administrative leave. The deputies involved have been, or will be, cleared to return to their duties on an individual basis.

By Zac Schultz
Madison: The Dane County Sheriff's Office has identified 42-year-old William Sorenson as the man deputies shot and killed Wednesday night.
It started at 7:20 in the evening, when Sorenson's wife called 911, saying her husband was drunk and she wanted him removed from the home.
"We know that there had been a number of domestic incidents involving this couple, many of which never were reported," says Sheriff Dave Mahoney.
When deputies arrived William was in the garage. "He did emerge walking out of the garage, armed with the shotgun," says Mahoney.
When he didn't put down the gun, deputies shot him with a non-lethal beanbag. "He raised the shotgun, firing at deputies, who immediately shot back in defense of their own lives," says Mahoney.
Interim Coroner Barry Irmen says Sorenson died of multiple gunshot wounds. "We know that Mr. Sorenson was intoxicated."
Sheriff Mahoney says they have now learned what Sorenson did before deputies arrived. "The deceased had made a call to a friend indicating that he was armed with a shotgun, he was in the garage, and he intended to die."
This was the second officer-involved shooting in two weeks. Deputies shot and killed a 47-year-old man in McFarland on July 20th after he shot at them.
"Probably the most difficult, the most potential for violence occurs in the response to a domestic related incident," says Mahoney. "I think the last two weeks highlight that very fact."
Six deputies remain on administrative leave after this latest shooting, while three others are still on administrative leave after the McFarland officer-involved shooting.
The District Attorney has already cleared all deputies involved in the McFarland shooting.
Mahoney is confident the same will happen in this case. "I have the utmost confidence in the deputies who responded and believe there will be a very positive outcome."
One of the deputies involved in the McFarland shooting was later cleared for duty and was involved in this latest shooting. He remains on administrative leave.

UPDATED Friday, July 30, 2010 --- 10:00 a.m.
The Dane County Coroner's Office has identified the man killed by Sheriff's Deputies as William Sorenson, age 42. Deputy Coroner Barry Irmen says Sorenson died of multiple gunshot wounds. Irmen says Sorenson was drunk, and they're waiting for more toxicology reports to see if he had anything else in his system.
Sheriff Dave Mahoney says Sorenson's wife called 911 and said her husband was drunk and she wanted him gone. Mahoney said there is a history of domestic violence calls at this house between husband and wife.
Mahoney says when he learned his wife called police, Sorenson became angry and went to his garage, where there is was a shotgun.
He then called a friend, told him 'goodbye' and told him he intended to die.
When deputies arrived, Sorenson confronted them in his driveway. He did not obey commands to drop his gun. Deputies fired a non-lethal beanbag at him. The beanbag struck Sorenson, but didn't cause him to comply to their command. He then fired his shotgun at the deputies--no one was hit--and the deputies fired back, killing him. Mahoney says he has the utmost confidence in deputies, and he believes their actions were appropriate.
This is the second fatal shooting by Dane County sheriff's deputies in two weeks. A McFarland man was killed by deputies' gunfire July 20th.
As a result of Wednesday's shooting, 5 deputies and 1 sergeant are on administrative leave.
3 deputies remain on administrative leave from the McFarland shooting.
1 of the 5 deputies placed on leave from Wednesday's shooting was also involved in the McFarland shooting, for which he was put on administrative leave, then cleared.

Investigators are still on the scene of a deadly shooting in Stoughton.
Tonight we're starting to learn more about the couple involved and while police have not released their identities, it's clear this wasn't the first sign of problems.
Around 7-thirty last night 911 dispatchers got a call from a woman living at a home on Aaker road just South of Stoughton.
She said her husband was intoxicated, causing problems and she wanted him removed.
According to Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney when deputies arrived a 42-year-old man walked out of the garage with a shotgun and refused to drop it when told.
Deputies fired a non lethal bean bag round at the man. He responded by firing the shotgun at deputies. They returned fire, striking and killing him.
Neighbor Jesse Talbert says, "We heard one single shot and right after that a whole barrage of pops, maybe 5 or 6. I couldn't tell you how many but it was a whole series of shots. "
Today investigators are still at the scene trying to put together the pieces.
Mahoney says deputies have been called to the home for domestic incidents before and on line court records show the couple filed for divorce in March.
One person who asked not to be identified said of their relationship, when it was good it was great but when it was bad it was really bad.
For Dane County Deputies this marks the second time in two weeks they've been fired at and returned fire killing someone.
Mahoney says one officer was involved in both incidents. He says he is confident all his officers acted appropriately and only fired to protect themselves.
Investigators have someone pretty specific they're looking for tonight who may have valuable information.
They say a man was bicycling past the home on Aaker Road between 7 and 8 and they would like to speak with him.
6 officers have been placed on administrative leave.

REPORTER: Chris Woodard
Dane County deputies use deadly force for the second time in two weeks, killing a Stoughton man.
Around 7-thirty tonight 911 operators got a call from a woman living on Aaker Road on Stoughton's South side.
The woman was involved in a domestic situation with her husband. She told the dispatcher her husband was intoxicated and she wanted him removed from the residence.
Deputies arrived and as they were walking up the driveway noticed a man in the garage holding a shotgun. Sheriff Dave Mahoney says the man walked towards the deputies and refused to drop the weapon when told.
Deputies tried to diffuse the situation by firing a nonlethal bean bag at the man. Mahoney says the bean bag hit the man but was not successful in stopping him or making him drop the weapon. He responded by shooting at the deputies.
They returned fire, hitting the man and began to administer first aid. Med Flight arrived and the man was pronounced dead. No deputies were hurt.
Neighbors say they heard a single shot, followed by a barrage of shots. Many say they thought they were hearing fireworks until they saw more officers rushing to the scene.
Mahoney says 2 of the deputies involved were also involved in the deadly shooting of a McFarland man last week and the situation where a man committed suicide in Stoughton after a traffic stop a few weeks before.
Police are currently processing the scene and say crime techs will arrive Thursday morning.
At least four officers will be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into tonight's shooting.
Mahoney says he is confident in the training and ability of his officers and believes they did what was necessary to protect themselves.

Clueless Lilly, Madison wasn't involved in this at all. It was a Dane County incident. Secondly, it happened too fast to get a tactical response team or hostage negotiator on the scene. They were being shot at, can you get that? I'm sure your application for hostage negotiator has been submitted, since you can do a better job and beam yourself to the scene in case of any sign of trouble.
I don't know what you could think is so Fishy Anon/8:50. It is pretty cut and dry. A family fight,a person who was in mental distress, a gun, and the knowledge that he would go back to prison for this. He couldn't shoot himself so he made the cops do it. I don't see anything fishy... just tragic. Maybe Madison needs better hostage/suicide negotiators, then maybe the police wouldn't have to keep killing people.
Just a point at 2:25, I was just saying iof the city of madison was screening their so called applicants the right way he probably wouldnt have been working for the city and yes a record DOES matter when it comes to working a Federal or State Job believe it or not
