Details:
A Madison Police officer was driving in the area of East Washington Ave. and Mendota St. early Tuesday morning when he spotted a heavily damaged Jeep Cherokee driving the wrong way in the inbound lanes of traffic.

The officer activated emergency lights and pulled partway into the intersection in order to alert inbound motorists of the potential hazard.

Drivers did slow and stop as the fluid-leaking Jeep turned north on Mendota Street.

The officer could see the driver was bleeding from the head, and pulled him over. The suspect told the officer he had been drinking, and that he had struck a car.

He was taken to jail after being treated and released from a local hospital.

He indicated the crash occurred at the intersection of E. Washington Ave. and Stoughton Road. The other driver was not injured. Following the collision, the suspect said he drove outbound in the inbound lanes until he saw the officer.
