The list is short. Only four police officers have died while serving Madison. The last coming almost eight decades ago in 1932.
Friday, in front of the East District, volunteers armed with shovels, wheel barrels and rakes continued work on a memorial to honor those four fallen officers, along with officers who retired.
"They have committed a lot of their lives and a lot of their work life to the city of Madison and to the law enforcement profession. " Assistant Police Chief Randy Gaber was there volunteering his time.
When the memorial is complete in about two weeks, it will have about a 12-foot radius, a bench and stones with the names of those who've died and served until retirement.
Assistant Chief Gaber says, " This is a way to remember those officers but also to remember those officers who have retired and have really committed their lives to serving the citizens of Madison. "
The memorial is designed to be expandable. So in the case that officers do retire or in the unfortunate event that another officer is killed their names can easily be added.
"This is really a timeless piece. We're setting it now but we're looking to the future because there's going to be such a big growth and just a change. "
Jonathan Klaas, with Avant Landscaping, is in charge of the project. He says the all the materials were donated and each of the fallen officers will receive an 8x8 stone and all the rest will get one that is 4x8.
Latest Comments
Wow. I made a simple comment and asked an honest question. Not once did I say that these pubic servants did not deserve recognition. I just don't understand the need for multiple memorials for the same people in the SAME city. I can see if it was somewhere else in the State, but it's here in the same city. That is the only reason I brought it up. Get a grip people.
What's whinning?
Hey, if you didn't notice, it says "comments". Never mind, I guess whinning is kind of like commenting.
