A Lodi man accused of torturing his ex-girlfriend's pet rabbit is out on bail.
22-year-old Dillon Schutz is being charged with animal abuse resulting in death. Schuts has already admitted to police that he tortured the animal, but also claims he enjoyed the abuse.
According to the criminal complaint, on June 21, Lisa Brincks brought her rabbit, Merlin, to her ex-boyfriend's apartment in Lodi. Schuts then told police that as soon as Brincks left the apartment, he began to torture the rabbit and says he even took videos of the abuse.
One of the videos recorded by Schutz shows him chasing the rabbit, while he repeatedly hits the animal. In another video investigators could hear the rabbit screaming as Schutz locked it in a closet and later slammed its head against a door.
Schutz later told police he had placed the rabbit in plastic bags and put it in the freezer. When asked if he felt any guilt for what he had done, Schutz replied, "No, I actually enjoyed it."
Schutz's next appearance in court is scheduled for September. If he is convicted, he could face a fine of up to $10,000 and 3 1/2 years in prison.
