They are known as "Study Drugs" and many parents request them nowadays to help their kids focus better in school. The trend is so common that the American Academy of Neurology has cautioned doctors against prescribing attention-boosting drugs for healthy kids.

Studies show that more and more kids are being diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder better known as ADHD.

"Nine percent of children are diagnosed with ADHD, which is a 24 to 25 percent increase in the past several years," said family medicine doctor, Laura Mendyk.

The disorder's well known medication treatments are now falling in the hands of healthy kids.

The American Academy of Neurology has recently referred to it as a "growing trend", where more and more parents request ADHD drugs to help their children focus better in school.

Doctor Laura Mendyk says the trend isn't real common in Madison but it's there . She says while it's legal to prescribe the drug it's considered unethical when the medication is not needed.

“Children who have ADHD really do benefit from stimulant medications and we see that over and over again, what we don't know about is what happens to the children who don't have ADHD and yet they are taking stimulant medications,”said Mendyk.

Mendyk says there are side effects that come with ADHD medications like agitation, weight loss, and dependence on the drug.

“I think that as a nation there is certainly an increased desire to be medicated,that it would be easy to take a pill and it should fix it all and unfortunately that is not always the case,”said Mendyk.
