VIDEO: Actor James Cromwell Speaks Out After Arrest

UPDATED Thursday, February 7, 2013 --- 4:06 p.m.

Statement from Eric Sandgren, director of the UW–Madison Research Animal Resources Center:

Today's events are just another attempt by outside activists to draw attention to a cause. They have attacked and distorted this research -- which has very real benefits for people who are deaf -- from every angle imaginable. Exhaustive independent investigation by the USDA, which regulates the use of animals in research, concluded that PETA's allegations are baseless.

UW-Madison released this tweet this afternoon:

@UWMadison: Wishing actor James Cromwell would have learned benefits of UW research before today's @PETA performance. You decide: http://animalresearch.wisc.edu

Actor James Cromwell was arrested at a UW Board of Regents meeting, according to a press release from PETA.

According to the animal rights organization, Cromwell entered the meeting to challenge regents over experiments on cats.

The release says campus police arrested Cromwell after he showed a picture of a cat with a large metal post protruding from its head. PETA says an organization staff member was also arrested.

Cromwell is a longtime PETA supporter. PETA has called on UW-Madison to end experiments on cats. The organization says they have received no response.

Cromwell is known for his roles in "American Horror Story", "LA Confidential" and for the role as Farmer Hoggett in "Babe."

The USDA found the claims baseless - that says all they need to know. It's a pity that Cameron has linked himself with an organisation which kills thousands of dogs and cats every year in its shelters.

I went to the PETA website and saw the horrific photos of this experiment on cats. There's no way to spin it - this is torture. I don't care whether or not it's legal. Slavery was also legal at one time. Wrong is wrong.

I wish people would have as much compassion for humans as they do animals.

I find this to be very interesting due to his role played in American Horror Story: Asylum. Granted it is only a television show but his role as Dr.Arden portrays him doing these same, very similar sorts of experiments to humans.

May God Bless you Mr.Cromwell.I have lived in Wisconsin for all these years and been unaware of these atrocious and barbaric practices going on right here under our noses.Thank you for standing up for this cause and bringing this to my attention. This is just as wrong as China killing cats for their furs which Paul McCartney took a stand against.Cats and dogs especially are loving and intelligent beings.I am disabled and my cat has been a loving and devoted companion to me.There is no doubt in my own mind that God put these beautiful beings here not only as companions for us but as well as perfect examples of unconditional love for us to learn from. This is morally wrong and should be made illegal as well.

Scott said it well. KUDOS to James Cromwell, and to PETA! There is no justification for such torture on any living creature, let alone humankind's companion animals. I am proud of our UW in so many ways, but I think that the ongoing barbaric experiments on animals are a travesty and an embarrassment; the UW which sets the bar so high in so many other areas should hold itself to a higher standard. These experiments need to stop immediately.

Good for you, Mr. Cromwell. I don't care what the benefits of an experiment are. The end does not justify the torturous means. Period.

    A true patriot.
