Assembly To Debate Reducing County Board Power

Posted: Wednesday, April 17, 2013 -- 7:40 a.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Wisconsin state Assembly is scheduled to debate a bill that would curb the power of the Milwaukee County Board.

Opponents of the Republican-backed measure up for debate Wednesday say they fear it could lead to similar attempts targeting other units of local government across the state. But the proposal's backers say they are focused solely on the Milwaukee board.

The bill would reduce the Milwaukee County Board's resources and authority, increase the power of the county executive, reduce terms of county supervisors from four to two years, and require a binding referendum next year on cutting supervisor salaries in half.

Gov. Scott Walker, a former Milwaukee County executive, supports the proposal.
