Assistant Milwaukee County Medical Examiner Resigns

Posted Friday, November 16, 2012 --- 3:40 p.m.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The assistant Milwaukee County medical examiner who initially ruled the death of a suspect in Milwaukee police custody natural has resigned.

A spokesman for County Executive Chris Abele says Christopher Poulos resigned effective Oct. 31.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (http://bit.ly/XhFCvP ) reports Poulos could not be reached for comment Friday.

Derek Williams died in July 2011 after gasping for breath and begging for help for about eight minutes in the back of a Milwaukee police car.

Poulos initially determined Williams' death was natural but changed the ruling to homicide after a Journal Sentinel investigation.

A special prosecutor will hold a public inquest into Williams' death in February. The FBI started a criminal civil rights investigation into Williams' death last month.
