UPDATED: Woman charged with faking cancer

UPDATED: Thursday, October 16, 2014

SPRING GREEN, Wis. --- A Spring Green woman is accused of faking cancer and cashing in on thousands of dollars that people and organizations donated for her bogus cancer fight.

"The fact that she preyed upon good, willing people who thought they were helping her, is just disgusting," said Sauk County Sheriff Chip Meister.

Theresa S. Strub, age 29, from Spring Green faces nine felonies and one misdemeanor, according to a news release from the Sauk County Sheriff's Office, Richland County Sheriff's Office and Spring Green Police Department.

Strub is accused of benefiting from fundraisers and charities designed to help her with a cancer fight. Strub told people she suffered from stomach and kidney cancer.

Strub's neighbor, Tiffani Crook, said Strub's illness seemed legitimate at the time.

"I don't understand how somebody could do it to friends, family, their own children... just people in the community," Crook said.

The investigation found cancer photos she used on social media were stock photos dating back more than a decade.

One of Strub's largest fundraisers was held at Arthur's restaurant in Spring Green. According to investigators, she collected more than $30,000 that night.

Crook said it's going to take some time for the community to move passed this.

"It's just going to be hard to trust people again I think, but you just have to understand there are people out there who do need this [money], you have to remember that," she said.

Several agencies participated in the investigation.

Strub is charged with Theft by False Representation, Identity Theft for Financial Gain and Attempted Theft by False Representation.
