BBB Warns Against A Scam Targeting Businesses

Lori Waters and her husband who own two local residential home builder businesses, recently received a suspicious letter from a company named Corporate Records Services. The company is asking businesses to renew their company's registration and pay a fee of 125 dollars.

“Had I not passed it off to my husband, I may have just written the check and sent it off because it looked so legitimate, "said Waters.

Waters had already paid for her renewal on the Wisconsin Department of Financial institutions' website. The odd request caused Waters to check the company on-line. Waters found the address on the letter she and her husband received wasn't an actual address of an office building but rather a rented P.O.Box inside a UPS store.

“I'll tell you this is a good fake because we've got a lot of people getting hit by it ,” said Better Business Bureau spokeswoman, Kimberly Hazen.

Hazen says they've received over a dozen complaints from victims that have dealt with the company that has an "F" rating.

The questions and the layout are identical to the state's, which makes it even more deceiving to many. Corporate Records Services has a website, an e-mail and a phone number that NBC 15 tried to contact, but instead got the answering machine of a different company.

Victims in several other states have also reported receiving letters from Corporate Records Services.
