BBB Warns Consumers About "Robo Calls"

Posted Tuesday, February 7, 2012 --- 5:40 p.m.

From the Wisconsin Better Business Bureau:

February 7, 2012, Milwaukee, Wis. — The Wisconsin Better Business Bureau (BBB) has been receiving calls and letters from consumers across the country regarding repeated, unsolicited “robo calls” to both their home and cell phones.

The calls are recorded messages offering to lower credit card interest rates. Consumers report that the message requests, “press 1 to speak with a representative.” However, when they do so, the caller hangs up on them.

In the last ten days, the BBB has received 17 written letters and dozens of phone calls from consumers complaining of these calls, which they say are annoying, continual and harassing. In fact, several complainants state they do not even own a credit card, yet they are receiving these calls.

Some of the calls appear to be coming from “Card Holder Services” though there is no such company in Wisconsin at the phone number that the calls are allegedly coming from.

In addition, one of the reported phone numbers that the calls appear to be coming from, was a former Fond Du Lac cell phone number that belonged to a family seven years ago, and is no longer current. As a result, the family is now receiving harassing phone calls from angry consumers. They told the BBB via letter that they “are not the responsible party for the harassing phone calls.” In fact, they are working with the state, local law enforcement, and the FCC in an attempt to get to the bottom of this situation.

Likely, the perpetrator behind the calls is using a call “spoofing” mechanism. Spoofing is the practice of causing a telephone device to display a number on the recipient’s caller I.D. that is not the actual originating phone number. It is accomplished by using a spoofing device or software mechanism.

If you receive such a phone call, the BBB recommends that you report the call to the Federal Trade Commission: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/. Also, check with your cell phone provider. Many providers allow phone numbers to be blocked from calling you, at no additional charge.

The BBB reminds consumers not to give out any personal or financial information over the phone to any unknown caller.

I have been receiving these calls for the past year, even though ALL my phones are registered with the "Do Not Call" list & don't have any credit cards that would be applicable. I have waited for a prompt to take my number off their list, but have never heard one. Next I tried pressing "1" & asking nicely, "Why are you calling me, I have no credit cards." The operator answered, very rudely with, "Why did press 1 then?" I stated that I was on the "Do Not Call" list & that I have no credit cards or solicited any buiness with this company, calling me means you're breaking the law. I was then screamed at & told that I needed to wait for the next prompt & hung up on! The phone number is always changing and I have seen the number 000 000 0000 on my Caller ID. Will this ever stop??? I have taken all the necessary steps to protect myself, yet this company is STILL harrassing me. Next would someone please address the telemarking texts that have now started since they can't call!!!!!!!!!

News organizations seem to give pat informationals on TV seeming to be more interested in listeners to tune in to their websites, than to further an investigation for additional information to their listeners as to the negative ramififcations of replying to these robo calls. Even the pat referencing article on your website does not substantiate any further clarification as to why the robo calls occur and for what reasons, other than it being an unknown annoyance. What is interesting about this news story, except that it has happened to me a couple of times? It's about as interesting as unsubscribing from spam landing on my email! I am not criticizing your station's news department, except to say that you really only simply filled a minute slot of programming on your news program with not much information that was interesting or clarified that you did any work to do so...... Love Scott
