VIDEO REPORT: Baraboo Ditches Boo Fest

Posted Thursday September 20, 2012 --- 5:05 p.m.

Babies dressed as bunnies, devil dogs and crazy crowds, all were part of Baraboo's Boo Fest. We say were because Boo Fest 2012 has been canceled. For some, like mom Julie Lane, today's announcement is a sad one.

" I've got fond memories because my kids participated when they were toddlers. "

Downtown Baraboo Inc. hosted the annual trick-or-treating event. Todd Wickus, the groups President, says the event was too popular for its own good and they were concerned about safety.

" We had to do what was best for the community."

Wickus says DBI and it's board were worried about pedestrians and vehicles. At the event's peak about 3,000 people filled roughly one square block. The event was only two hours long and people would spill into the streets creating traffic issues.

Officials tried closing streets and adding crossing guards. But, not everyone followed the rules.

Wickus says, " Sometimes either the cars wouldn't obey the crossing guards or the pedestrians wouldn't obey the crossing guards. "

There were never any major incidents and to make sure it stayed that way DBI and its board thought it was time to shut Boo Fest down.

Leah Rachuj says, " It's sad. There's a lot of kids that count on that and I think it's the safest way for kids to go trick or treating now a days. "

Officials say Boo Fest may be gone but they want people to remember that there are still plenty of other safe, alternative trick or treating events going on in Baraboo.

I read this event has been going on for ten years. A downtown shop owner told me once they have seen 32 business close in the ten years they have been there. I guess giving out candy didnt help. heck the candy store just closed up shop a month ago. As for being safe from the 91 sex offenders you know where they are, its the ones you dont know about that you should worry about or the ones in the crowd of 3000 people. I would rather walk in my quiet neighborhood than be on the square with open bars . I think if the local businesses voted that they dont want to do it anymore then its over. It is unsafe now so if they used that reason then it is justified.

When I think of all the times I shopped for birthday and Christmas gifts making a point to do business with Downtown Baraboo to support local businesses even though it cost more,it took extra time, and parking is a pain this makes me angry. Downtown Baraboo supports the Winewalk, The Holiday Lights, Old Fashioned Days will all of these be cancelled for "safety" reasons as well or is it that BooFest is inconvenient to some of the businesses and doesn't bring money in like some of the other promotions. I won't bother to shop downtown in the future. Clearly no effort is being made on the business owners end for the community. It was one afternoon where little kids could get safe candy and the square was closed to traffic so kids could cross the street safely. Baraboo has 91 registered sex offenders that the kids can now "safely" visit when they go out trick or treating on Halloween and a collection of drug houses to choose from. Excellent.
