UPDATE: Bicyclist Struck, Killed In Dane County; Driver Fell Asleep at the Wheel

UPDATED Wednesday, October 10, 2012 --- 10:32 a.m.

From the Dane County Sheriff's Office:

October 10, 2012 – A preliminary investigation into the truck vs. bicycle crash on CTH M is consistent with the driver’s admission that he fell asleep at the wheel. A witness also reports seeing the blue pick-up truck drifting toward the shoulder of the road several times, before he ultimately struck the female bicyclist. The bicyclist has been identified by the Dane County Medical Examiner as Carrie J. Pete, age 37 of Madison.

This fatality crash remains an open investigation. Once completed, the information will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office to be reviewed for any possible charges.

The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office is releasing the name of the female that died in the pickup truck vs. bicycle crash yesterday (10-08-12). The crash happened in the Town of Westport, on CTH M north of Borchers Beach Road at 11:37AM.

The female is identified as:

Madison, WI

A forensic autopsy was completed today at the Medical Examiner’s Office. The preliminary autopsy results indicated that Ms. Pete’s death was due to blunt force trauma sustained in the crash. Additional testing is underway at this time.

This case remains under investigation by the Dane County Sheriff’s Office and the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office.

UPDATED Monday, October 8, 2012 --- 4:45 p.m.

From the Dane County Sheriff's Office:

Madison, WI. October 8, 2012 – At approximately 11:37 am, Dane County Sheriff’s deputies, along with Waunakee EMS, responded to a car vs. bicyclist crash on County Highway M near the entrance to Governor Nelson State Park in the Town of Westport.

A blue 1997 Dodge pick-up truck was traveling westbound on County Highway M and drifted to the right, out of its travel lane, onto the paved shoulder of the road. The blue pick-up truck struck a bicyclist who was also traveling westbound on the right shoulder of County Highway M.

The female operator of the bicycle, age 37 of Madison, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pick-up, Timothy J. Grulke, age 21 of Waunakee, WI, was not injured. The reason Grulke’s vehicle veered out of its travel lane remains under investigation.

The identity of the deceased female will be released by the Medical Examiner’s Office pending notification of family members.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Dane County authorities report another bicyclist has died in a crash with a motor vehicle.

The sheriff's office say a bicyclist was killed Monday when she was struck by a pickup truck near Governor Nelson State Park in Westport.

A sheriff's spokeswoman says the pickup was traveling south on Highway M when it veered off the road and struck the cyclist shortly before 11:40 a.m.

The bicyclist died at the scene. Her name was not released.

It is the second bicycle fatality in Dane County in less than a week.

On Wednesday, a bicyclist collided with a car on Madison's East Side. The Dane County medical examiner's office says 21-year-old Tyler Knipfer of Madison was pinned beneath the vehicle and died several days later.
