UPDATE: Minn. man gets 27 years in wife's murder

UPDATED Monday, November 25, 2013 --- 4:43 p.m.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- A Minnesota man convicted of killing his wife and dumping her body in the Mississippi River has been sentenced to 27 years in prison.

Judge Leonardo Castro on Monday gave Jeffery Trevino of St. Paul a prison sentence above state guidelines.

Prosecutors had sought a 30-year prison term for Trevino, citing aggravating factors. Prosecutors believe Trevino didn't provide medical aid to his wife, Kira Steger, and that he disposed of her body and didn't tell anyone.

Sentencing guidelines call for a maximum 15 years in prison.

The Star Tribune reports Trevino's attorney argued his client should get about 10.5 years.

A Ramsey County jury convicted the 39-year-old Trevino of second-degree unintentional murder last month. Steger, who grew up near Wausau, Wis., went missing the night of Feb. 21.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Court documents say the body of a missing St. Paul woman was battered and naked when it was recovered from the Mississippi River.

The body of 30-year-old Kira Steger Trevino was recovered from the river in downtown St. Paul Wednesday. Her husband, Jeffery Trevino, is charged in her death and is scheduled to stand trial May 28. He remains jailed in Ramsey County on $1 million bond.

Prosecutors filed a motion Friday seeking more time for experts to analyze the woman's body and other evidence in her disappearance. Defense attorneys wanted test results by May 15.

KSTP-TV reports the court documents say injuries to the body include a head wound, a broken finger, bruising inside her lip and lacerations to her liver. She also had duct tape in her hair.

ST PAUL, Min (WEAU)--Homicide detectives in St. Paul, Mn held a news conference Thursday afternoon where they confirmed a body found in the Mississippi River is that of Kira Trevino, the woman missing since February.

Detectives say the body was found at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday under a barge south of the Robert Street Bridge.

For months, police and volunteers have been searching for Trevino. The 30-year-old St. Paul woman, who is originally from the Wausau area, has been missing since February.

Trevino was reported missing by her husband, Jeffery Trevino, on February 24. He said he last saw Kira on Friday, February 22 when she left their St. Paul home to run errands and go to work at a store in the Mall of America.

Less than a week later, Jeffery Trevino was arrested and charged with 2nd degree murder after police found "copious amounts of blood" and evidence of extensive clean-up in their home.
