The bomb squad was called to downtown Madison Friday afternoon to check out a suspicious item that turned out to be a cotter pin from a truck.
Someone called authorities to report the object shortly before 1 this afternoon. From a distance, it looked like a pipe bomb.
Traffic was closed in the area of W. Washington Ave. and Fairchild St., but it has since re-opened.

Madison Police say the Bomb Squad has been called to check a suspicious item found downtown.
Someone called authorities around 12:57 p.m. Friday to report some type of suspicious object at W. Washington Ave. and Fairchild St.
The area has been closed to traffic and pedestrians while authorities check it out.
