UPDATE Burke to say Wisconsin needs 'new direction'

UPDATED Friday, June 6, 2014 --- 3:40 p.m.

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. (AP) -- Gubernatorial candidate Mary Burke plans to tell Democrats at the state party convention that Wisconsin needs a "new direction" away from the policies of Republican Gov. Scott Walker.

Burke's campaign released excerpts of the speech she planned to deliver Friday night to about 1,000 party faithful at a resort in Wisconsin Dells.

In those excerpts Burke says that Walker "puts those at the top and the special interests ahead of families. That approach isn't working."

She plans to tell Democrats that as she's traveled Wisconsin, she's met families struggling to survive financially. Burke says in the excerpts she will provide a business-like approach to job creation and strengthening the middle class.

Burke will promise to work with Democrats, Republicans and independents to find common ground.

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin Democrats gathering for their annual state convention will hear from the candidate they hope can knock of Republican Gov. Scott Walker.

Mary Burke is scheduled to give the keynote speech at Friday night's convention Friday at a resort in Wisconsin Dells. Burke's attempt to defeat Walker comes in her first statewide race. She is a member of the Madison school board, served two years as Commerce secretary under Gov. Jim Doyle, and is a former Trek Bicycle Corp. executive.

Burke told The Associated Press on Thursday she hopes to use the speech before about 1,000 Democrats to unify the party as it works to defeat Walker.

Longshot Democratic challenger state Rep. Brett Hulsey was not given a speaking slot, but he still planned to be at the convention.
