UPDATE: Burke: Public financing for stadium a last option

UPDATED Tuesday, May 6, 2014 --- 3:50 p.m.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Democratic candidate for governor Mary Burke says she open to the idea of public financing for a new Milwaukee sports arena, but only as a last option.

Burke said Tuesday she'd prefer to see a new arena paid for with private funds instead.

The future of the BMO Harris Bradley Center, where the Milwaukee Bucks play, remains in doubt. Bucks owner Herb Kohl announced last month he was selling the team, and he and the buyers pledged a total of $200 million toward building a new arena.

But that could still leave taxpayers on the hook for another $200 million or more.

Options include a regional sales tax, as was used for the Brewers' Miller Park, or financing from private investors who would share in stadium revenue.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Democratic candidate for governor Mary Burke is scheduled to take part in a public conversation sponsored by two Milwaukee organizations.

Burke is hoping to unseat Republican Gov. Scott Walker in November's election. She'll be the featured guest Tuesday at an event organized by the Rotary Club of Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Press Club.

Burke is a former Trek Bicycle Corp. executive and state commerce secretary. She's the clear front-runner for the Democratic nomination, with $1.3 million in the bank as of Dec. 31.

She'll square off against three other Democrats in an Aug. 12 primary -- state Rep. Brett Hulsey, Marcia Mercedes Perkins and Hari Trivedi. The winner faces Walker on Nov. 4.

Burke has presented a five-point jobs plan that would invest in entrepreneurs and focus on higher education.
